Today I went down to the local jeweler to shop around for my upgrade. I thought i wanted a pear (since i have seen my aunt''s pear years ago which was gorgeous) but when the jeweler showed me some new stones that just came in, i fell in love with the radiant and square brilliant instead.

The problem is,I wanted my upgrade to look larger than my current stone since i have been getting shrinkage. From what I have read the spread of these two shapes are pretty small, and I would probably have to go up to 2 carats just to match the current size of my round, which is 1.5 carats, so i would have to pay quite a bit more to see a visible size difference. I love the spread and shape of the pear, but i love the look of the radiant/square brilliant. Which would you pick?

If it's affordable for you, I'd get the shape you really want. I'd take my time too.

I also think you should get the "look" you really like, even if it means saving up a bit longer. Also, I think the more rectangular you go with the radiants/square brilliants, the better the spread -- but I agree, you''d have to go up quite a bit in size to beat your 1.5 ct RB.

Pear, but I love pears!

Agree with above - take your time, go back and look again in a couple of days, make sure you get the shape you really want. I also agree that the more rectangular the radiants, etc seem to be, the larger they can appear. I don't have immediate access, but do you have the amazon size chart?

Thritto, quaditto!

thanks for the suggestions!

I did, very briefly contemplate a 4 carat radiant (somewhat equivalent in size to the 2.5ish - 3 carat pears I was looking at) but it costs too much so I would have to shelve that idea.

The jeweler has suggested I put a halo to make the radiant look bigger, or get a setting i love for the pear instead. I don''t know which I would go for, but I suppose I need to look at more stones to decide!

I think you should get exactly what you want, and the only way is to look around and try on as many shapes and sizes as you can.

I am partial to RBs and pears, as you know, but that's just me. Also, IMO, you'd have to go up to 2ct for a radiant for it to have the same spread as a 1.5ct RB, as radiants tend to be cut deeper, but I could be wrong.

Sorry, just realised my post above is as clear as mud, he he!!

What I meant is I wouldn''t get something just because of the spread, ie. the pear. You''d have to love the shape and how such a stone would look on your hand. I admit I bought the pear because of its generous spread but I also love its feminine curvy shape. I wouldn''t have bought it purely because it looks larger than its RB counterpart.

Re-reading your post, it sounds as if you really LOVE radiants/ square brilliants. I''d go with what my heart tells me. Would it be possible for you to lower the colour and/ or clarity to get the size you want?

(Incidentally, excuse my ignorance, but what''s a "square brilliant"? I know the Lucida is a square modified brilliant, which I love btw, but "square briliant", isn''t that a radiant?)

Hi Phoenix,

I suppose modified square brilliant is the proper name, I just didn''t know it :p the look of the ''square brilliant'' had what looked like hearts and arrows faceting, which reminds me of a round.

I have been contemplating going down to an I, maybe with med blue florescence so it doesn''t look yellow. Clarity wise i don''t think I can go down any further since I have set it at SI2.

I always thought I loved pears because i like the fat, teardrop shape look - it just looks so cute to me, and my aunt''s pear was just gorgeous. but on the day when i went shopping i fell in love with the modified brilliant and radiant instead. So right now i am confused, and i am afraid i will keep changing my mind post upgrade!
