Hi guys.

Read the forums a lot and have learned a ton. Let me first say I trust the guy I'm dealing with and he is incredibly knowledgable. Just want all your opinions on this stone. I think it's a great price but I'd love to hear opinions.

First it's got an AGS cert, which I understand is the strictest. I originally wanted a g-I but after talking with my dealer he convinced me that because of the medium blue fluorescent it will help the j colour look closer to I.

Specs

J color
Si2
1.01 ct
HCA 1.5
Medium blue fluorescence
6.48x6.46x3.77
Good polish
Excellent symmetry

Not sure if I need to include anything else for you guys. Very intrigued and at 3400 it seems very reasonable. The guy I'm dealing with is excellent and totally accommodating, not rushing a sale. I'm going to have it independently appraised tomorrow.

Any opinions are appreciated. Thanks guys!

What grade did AGS give it for cut and light performance? Can you share the angles (crown/pavilion, depth/table percentage, etc)?

I can't seem to find the cut grade? I have read a ton lately about quality and understand the cut grades and have viewed different cut diamonds. From excellent to good. I'm definitely still new. But haven't looked at many ags diamonds. Thanks again

Not a very well cut stone, I would look further, the J color is at the low end of the white stones, but in a setting it should be white. Try to find an GIA Excellent cut or a AGSL Ideal cut.

Can I ask how you can tell its not well cut?

I know people here rave about good cuts as most important.

Thanks for any help. Just trying to get an idea. Open to any opinions. I'm told it is a a grat looking stone for price. Should I even bother having appraiser look at it?

Anyone? Any insight is helpful!

Honestly, I wouldn't touch this stone.

When you plug the cut proportions (table, depth, crown and pavillion angles) into the HCA tool here (which predicts light performance and is used as a weeding out tool) it scores a 4.2 (not 1.5) and also has an "almost fish eye" alert.

Truly ideal cuts score <2.0

Bottom line, it's poorly cut and even with an AGS report, it probably skews more in the higher # AGS range which is good/fair to poor.

Look for crown angles of 34-35, Pavilion angles 40.6-41.0, girdle thin-med/medium/med-sl thick, depth 60-62, table 53-57...ask the people your dealing with to show you stones that are in this range in GIA & AGSL

An AGS certification is wonderful to have... if it scores a 0 ideal cut grade, that is. You have a 32.4 crown and 39.6 pavilion, which will not give you ideal proportions. Ask to see either a GIA Excellent or (preferably) AGS 0 Ideal cut stone, and then compare that with the stone you listed here. You'll see the difference.

They said it was a good looking stone for the price, and there's some truth in that. For a $3400 budget, you're getting a 1.0ct J SI2, but you're sacrificing cut quality to get it. You're getting what you pay for, which is exactly how diamond shopping works. If you really want a 1.0ct stone for under $4000, something (and a lot of other things) are going to have to give

Thanks for the input. Disappointed jts not the quality I had hoped. But it just means back to the drawing board! Hah.

Budget isn't really an issue, but I'm at an age where I have lots of time to spend big money on quality stones. Sk something around 3500-4200 for a 1 ct is something I'd be looking for at this point.

Any other suggestions or advice? Thanks again.
