Hi everyone, new to this forum but wanted to get some opinions as I love reading through this forum. Recently we picked out my ering (yay! ) and the stats are shown below (GIA certified), I'm no expert on diamonds, but had done a little research, and thought when I saw it it looked pretty good and the feathering wasn't too extensive or eye visible but wanting to know whether IYHO's what you think of it....

We're in Australia (so I understand prices here are quite a bit more than in the US and other countries for some reason!) and went to a reputable dealer (Diamonds International) and paid just under $10k including the solitaire, 6 prong, knife edge band, platinum setting...I think the loose diamond was just under $8k? We picked the diamond loose to put in the setting, so was able to have a really good look at it ;))

What I was kind of worried about was the feathering in relation to the stability of the diamond in setting (though the company are setting it so if something does happen it's covered) and the table is a bit on the small side (when comparing with a .8 in a shallower cut the size difference wasn't obvious- but maybe mine will sparkle more?). I also don't have much of an idea what some of the proportions will do to the look of the diamond and the amount of sparkle.

Anyway opinions welcome! :P

I just ran the HCA, out of curiosity, and it came in at 1.9. That's good news.

Being in Australia myself, diamond prices down here are outrageous. I think that, all things considered, you got a fair deal. I found a similar stone (.93) listed by Good Old Gold for $6700. It's just short of miraculous that you only paid ~$1000 more than that at an Australian retail shop. My rule of thumb is 30% more down here than on the internet (though I've seen upwards of 50% more exxy!). If that rule were to apply to your situation, you should have paid about $9100 for the stone. Obviously you did not, so I think you did well.

Congratulations on getting a beautiful stone for a fair price. :appl:

Oh yay! I did run the HCA but didn't really know what it meant, other than below 2 was good

They were having their annual 40% off storewide sale so would have been looking at around $13-14k just for the stone outside of the sale which I though was a bit rich and way over our budget- but yeah diamond prices in retail stores here in Aus are outrageous unless you want to go to one of the cheaper chain store jewellers and happy to get something that's not GIA certified (which is fine for some, but I like to know what I'm getting for my $$).

If we were brave enough we probably would have looked online for the stone and gotten a better price, but it kind of takes you out of the whole fun of sitting down and trying them on and really choosing out the stone that sparkles the most.

Now just have to wait for it to be set and for SO to pop the question lol *bites fingernails*

Seems good to me :)
