Opinions on diamond recommended to me by Quest Jewelers

Hello,

I'm looking to purchase an engagement year for my girlfriend of 3 years. We visited Quest Jewelers (which is local to us) and she picked out the exact setting she wants for a round diamond, so it's up to me to pick the stone. I know the size she wants (~1.6 carats) and she's happy with a G color. They carry GIA diamonds, and from everything I've read cut is most important, so I was not going to consider anything other than Excellent cut. In regards to clarity, all she cares about is eye clean, so we were hoping the jeweler would be able to pick us a good eye clean diamond at a reasonable price (so likely SI1).

I gave this info to the jeweler a price range and this is the diamond he came back with that he most recommended:
Size: 1.63
GIA cut: Very Good
Polish: Very Good
Symmetry: Excellent
Table: 58.1, Depth: 62.1
Price: $12,901 (this seems a little high, but no unreasonable)

I should say that it looks like the jeweler did a good job in picking out a clean SI1. From the GIA report, there's only two needles on the outer circumference of the diamond, and they could be easily pronged out. So I'm very happy about that. He has also been very good about encouraging me not to pay for things I don't need (e.g. going to VS2 if we can get a good SI1, not going to 1.7 carats since the difference won't be visible on the finger, etc)

However, I am concerned about the VG cut (and polish too). I came into this wanting to get an Excellent cut and only that (Quest labels both VG and EX as "Ideal" cut). Now I did look at the diamond, and it did look very sparkly to my untrained eye and I personally didn't notice any difference between it and other EX diamonds, but I want to make sure I get a technically well cut diamond that appraises well. So I'm asking the Pricescope experts, should I discount this diamond and tell him only EX cut? What about polish?

My girlfriend really likes the idea of going to a local store, so I think we're definitely going with Quest. They have been very helpful and did find a good SI1 like I wanted. But I would like to here others opinions on clarity and whether my original inclination to only go with EX cut is a good one. I suppose the only negative is he may not be able to find an EX cut diamond that has as good clarity.

Thanks!

do you have crown and pavilion angles (to plug into HCA) or the GIA report number?

Unfortunately I do not. I would be able to ask the jeweler for the GIA number, but would that allow forum users to look it up? He did tell me the diamond was not on their website.

I suppose I was expecting replies to just back me up and tell him to make sure to find an EX cut. Is there a chance the VG is just as good and could that be determined via a GIA report?

Edit: actually, I'm almost positive this is the diamond http://tinyurl.com/2559rd8. He specifically said it wasn't on the website - I'll chock it up as an honest mistake but this increases my skepticism

If that is the stone, then the proportions are bad, no way near ideal. Plug it into the cut adviser and see what score it gets.

tyty333,

Thank you for the recommendation! I personally am unable to see the feather in that diamond and it looks great to me, but I'm no expert. I'd be glad to hear more opinions on the diamond tyty333 picked out from other Pricescope members.

Also, it looks like this diamond is also on the local jewelers webpage.

Thank you!

Virtual listing, quite common, own by some other vendor and listed on some online vendors in the hopes of moving it faster.

JA stone, looks promising from the numbers. JA can most likely call it in and take an idealscope image for free.

Please allow one more bump...

I've let the jeweler know my desire for an excellent cut ring with a good HCA score, and he came back with the following VS2 diamond (1.3 HCA). It costs a little more than the previous diamonds in being classified a VS2, but the price he's given me is actually $500 less than the price I see for the exact same diamond on Blue Nile.

For a VS2, I see a lot of red on the GIA reference diagram, but from what I read size of inclusions on a GIA report is meaningless. I gladly welcome any thoughts or opinions.

Thanks so much!

visibility of inclusions depends on the stone size, placement, your visual acuity... best determine what "clean" means to you and ask your vendor to check the stone by your standards.

Numbers are "fine", professional appraisal/IS & look in person would be the next step

H&A inscription doesn't mean anything to you without a look at the hearts through a hearts viewer (or a photo of) to prove

If I was on the hunt for a stone and this one is well priced I would investigate further :))

ETA: you may want to remove the note that this stone is also available on the other website unless Quest has it in hand and has it reserved for you, I imagine there are many lurkers looking for diamonds for holiday proposals

ditto.

Inclusions are fine at VS2 level. The grade setting inclusion is the cloud so the feather, although large on the map, is at worst, a VS1 level grade inclusion.
