Opinions on art deco setting for red spinel

Hi all,

I'm wanting to set this red spinel from Gary at Finewater for a special birthday for my wife. I was originally thinking a 5 stone with traps and bullets, but wanted something with a more art deco feel. So came up with this. Is it too much? I wanted something significant with good finger coverage while still highlighting the spinel. This will be in 18k yellow gold.

Any options and or comments appreciated. Thanks.

Ooh, pretty stone. I don't think your idea is "too much." But personally, I wouldn't like it because such thick, band-ish rings don't look good on my hand; more vertical rings do.

Do you know your wife's jewelry tastes well? Another idea would be to give her the spinel as the gift, then design the ring together.

personally I think the side tiny bags are superfluous you couldn’t remove those and get similar finger coverage and look more streamlined

I love the style, but the profile view looks almost a little concave. Can you have them adjust the angles so it's not a straight line?

As for the ring design, personally, I would opt for either all vertical or all horizontal side stones, and not a mixture of the two.

I would either remove the vertical baguettes from the mix; or replace the 3 horizontal ones with another vertical ones; if you know what I mean.

I love it! I also love the one baguette going one way and others going the other way. I think that adds to the deco feel. And I love that it’s more like a thick band rather than vertical. But these are, as others have noted, matters of specific taste. For me, your design is right up my alley.

If raised I might think some gaps in the profile would be appropriate to break up all that side metal

Fantastic stone! Your design is quite nice, but I would agree with @ForteKitty that he should curve the shoulders holding the side stones. I kinda like the baguettes on the side, but wonder if it’s too much.

Also, I do find this design very beautiful; however, “true” deco is usually platinum (or at least white metal), not yellow gold (much less 18K). Not sure whether it is you or your wife wanting “deco“ or yellow, but just so you know. That spinel will look amazing in yellow gold tho!

I like your design and I love the side baguettes! Why is one E/W? I would like 3 N/S baguettes on each side in linearly tapering sizes (size-permitting) -- seems more Deco to me. Can't seem to find my inspo pic.

That spinel is going to look amazing in 18K YG. I like the baguettes and style of the ring, and don’t think it’s too much. Look at the other jewelry she wears. If you think it will be too much you could reduce the number of baguettes. Do an image search for emerald diamond baguette ring to get more ideas. Emeralds are more likely to be rectangular and give you a better idea of your options.

I had David do away with the 3 stone e/w and decided to do a 5 stone with all n/s.

The first stone from center will be 5x3mm, and the 3.5x2mm. I'm trying to get the profile right. Does this look better?

I personally love the look of N/S and E/W baguettes together for that deco look, but then I just had my e-ring designed pretty much just like that! It’s the one on my profile if you want to see what the combo looks like on mine.

I love the idea but for me, the proportions are off a bit. The side stones are making the ring look very fat and chunky. I'd be tempted to add smaller baguettes so that the spinel becomes the focus. You'll still have finger estate but in a more delicate rather than chunky way.

I have a couple minor modifications like to make the outer side stones the same width as the inner sides, the design on the shoulder is upside-down, and then I have him add some etchings to the sides of the semi-bezels.

I hope you don’t mind me being honest but I much prefer the very first design. This has a heavy look to it from the top. Your first design with the vertical/horizontal diamonds was less about the ring itself and more about the stones. Having said all of that, we all have different likes/dislikes so if this design makes you smile and you love it, go with that.

I agree, I’m drawn to the vertical/horizontal look but that’s just me.

Nope. Not all. I appreciate an honest opinion. This latest ring has a bigger shank for the shoulder design, but I was thinking it could add more art deco details besides just the configuration of the stones. I have much to consider. Thank you for taking the time for your thoughts.
