I think without seeing the stone you have a good chance of it being eyeclean. With many tiny inclusions, you generally fare better than with one or two large ones - particularly because this is a rather large stone! If you've seen the stone, what do you think?

The pictures all look like they were taken at a tilted angle. Any chance you could get better straight on photos?

Hello-

I have not seen the stone in person. I have been told it is eye clean at 8 inches (which I guess could mean at 4 inches it is not?). It is on line so before I go through the hassle of sending money, having it shipped etc.. I thought I would get some input here.

I will ask for some additional photos. I do have a video, but it is all of 6 seconds and hard to tell from the clip.

It scores a 1.5 on the HCA scale.

Thank you for your help I really appreciate it!

Some more photos. Described as 110% eye clean, nice J color with Medium Fluorescence.

The photos are not super high res so it is hard to tell actual clarity.

And a couple more...

Thoughts, opinions, suggestions?

I think the inclusions are very acceptable.

HI:

Link to the cert for dimensions, etc?

cheers--Sharon

Hi sunlvr,

This is a very large diamond indeed and it also is a very fine make of cut which can be more uncommon in stones of this size. The images look extremely good, obviously the optical symmetry isn't as precise as that of other smaller diamonds, but it still has discernible patterning although it's not by any stretch cut to the strict standards that branded H&A stones meet, that's not an issue if one wants a very large well cut diamond! :wink2:

Do try to make sure the diamond is eye clean away from any bright store lights, an eye clean SI in this size range is a great find but you want to make absolutely sure that any inclusions aren't going to pop out in some lights more than others. Although it's described as '' 110% eye clean'' I would want to verify that carefully.

J colour is fine if your wife is ok with seeing a touch of warmth in some lightings, such a big rock might show that, medium blue fluorescence is a nice addition and might have a beneficial effect on the stone's colour in some lighting.

If all of the above check out then you might have found your diamond...

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your wife a very happy anniversary, what a lovely Husband you are! :wavey:

I don't define 110% eye clean from 8 inches away. Honestly coming from someone who has and loves larger diamonds I absolutely couldn't live with seeing them from 6-8 inches. I would drop down just slightly in size to get one that is eyeclean. I think over 3cts inclusions are just magnified in larger stones so they are much more noticeable. To me the cut doesn't matter if I see the issues. Perhaps something closer to 4cts with it being eye clean no matter what the distance?

Hi OP, by the photos and info. given, I think it's a great find! You've seen it IRL and looks great? If so, then go for it. Do the usual due diligence with a third party appraiser and insure that puppy. How do you and your wife plan to set it? I can't wait to see the finished masterpiece. wow, has tons of finger coverage!

ETA: for many vetted PS vendors, this definition of eye clean would pass. The right setting can be helpful.

I has a second jeweler look at the stone and here is her quote on the clarity:

"Ok, so it's 110% eye clean. I know the plot diagram on the certificate is quite scary, but you can't see ANY of those inclusions without a loupe (because none are black!) Maybe from only like 1 inch away, and if you know where it is, you might be able to make out the feather (that's the biggest inclusion) but you really got to be hunting for it... very close to your face."

I hear you on the clarity issue. I guess I would ask the same about color. Would you go with an H or I instead of J.

One of my wife's friends said to me, "after a day of wearing a diamond, with hand cream, dirty, etc.. who can really tell color unless it is next to a whiter stone. What people remember is the size and sparkle." Which is why I have been focused more on good cut and a decent size. J Si1 has been my focus.

She already has a D VS1 engagement ring, 1.4 ct. That is her daily ring.

Perhaps I should just break the news to her rather than try to surprise her on my own and let her give me input on the size, color and clarity she wants rather than me biasing one way or another and missing the target? The problem is I will tell her, and she being frugal will most likely says she does not need the stone and she is happy with what she has now. The challenges men face!

double post sorry!

Well if an independent appraiser is saying they are hard to see at 1inch away that changes things for me.

I personally love the idea of it being a surprise. I would continue on and not tell her.

As far as color does it show more color from the side or top down? My 5ct (with no flur) faces up closer to an L but from the side it is definitely O/P. The Flur in your diamond will also cause it to face up whiter so I'm guessing the I will look closer to a H. Based off the pictures you have shown here I don't think it looks yellow or creamy. I think you will be fine.

Hi OP, first of all, you are so sweet to want to give her such a generous gift! Your detail about the clarity helps a lot and I would be delighted to have a large J Si1 that you describe. As far as color though, I tend to agree with your friend. Unless it's getting scrutinized next to a much whiter stone (DEF), a J really looks very white on it's own if it's well cut (and your selection is). So, I think your initial parameters/priorities are good, similar to my own. The majority of the time, people will just see a huge, white, flashy, sparkly rock! Only you know the gradings.

However, you bring up your wife's wishes and you might want to include her at some point with such a large purchase. Would she be happier with a tennis bracelet or a pendant? Does this new ring fit with her lifestyle and be worn with confidence and joy? Things to consider...but I would love it and rock that baby! Just my two cents

1.5 D VS1 for every day

a 4.27 J Si1 "just because"...

what a life!

This... THIS... is why I dont let SO browse PS. lol - that and DSS

Very nice find OP.

If this is eyeclean from any distance as your appraiser says, I would pull the trigger.

As your friend says, its size and sparkle. and nobody going to forget a 4.2 any time soon ^^ or the lovely lady wearing it
