Hello!

This is a great message board. I am looking at getting this diamond:

Natural diamond,
cushion modified, brilliant cut,
measuring 7.54 x 6.82, 4.20 mm.,
weight: 1.72 carats,
depth: 61.6%,
table: 65%
girdle, thin to very thick, faceted,
cutlet: none,
color: near colorless (I),
clarity: VS(1),
florescence: faint,
polish/symmetry: very good/good
Total estimated retail replacement value 17,495.00

If someone tells me how to post a picture - I have a small photograph of the diamond mounted - but I am not sure how useful it is on account of it is a small photo.

I am new to this forum - so if I have broken any rules - tell me and I'll fix it!

Thank you in advance!

Is this cushion actually in a ring? Regarding the cushion itself, they are tricky to judge by the numbers, your own eyes are the most important thing, to see if the particular faceting pattern appeals to you, shape etc. If you find this cushion isn't the one after all, contact Mark at Engagement Rings Direct, he is known as the cushion guy around here for good reason! Lastly some larger diamonds in this shape may show a teensy tad of warmth, especially from the side, but many embrace this and feel it can add charm to the cushion itself, see how it looks to you though, as you may find it is plenty white! Does it have a GIA report?

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the fast reply!

The cushion is already mounted in a ring - I was trying to be vague - because I don't want my soon to be fiancé to know what she is getting if she should find this message board. :)

Please let me know if anyone wants more information and I will try my best to provide it. It is a big decision – so why not ask for help.

Also, thank you for the information on Mark at Engagement Rings Direct!

Yes it has a IGI report online and the GIA report comes with purchase.

I would go ahead and post some pics of it as that would be useful, but the main thing is that you love it and think your GF will. If you could let us know which lab graded this diamond, that would be helpful too.

Also I am not sure the who is selling this ring, but if it is a private seller, then an independant appraisal would be most prudent to check the diamond for damage and that it matches the grading report. If it doesn't have a GIA report and it is available from a jeweller, an independant appraisal would still be a good idea.

ETA - I see you added the grading report info, do you mean that the seller is going to send the diamond off to GIA for a new report if you buy it? GIA are considered to be the industry standard for grading, so have the sellers said what would happen pricewise if the diamond comes back of a lower colour and clarity grade than the other report says - I am not saying this will happen, but it might be a possibility.

Okay - I guess I''ll give all of the details and then even if I decide to get this ring - I''ll say that I am still thinking about it :) - she picked this ring out and is in LOVE with it. Infact, she thinks it is too expensive and thinks that she willl not get it.

This is from an online retailer that states:

This item comes with a Summation Of Appraisal certificate from the International Gemological Institute (IGI). This is to certify that the item described above is genuine, and has been independently examined in the laboratories of IGI.
Also included with this diamond is a GIA (Gemological Institute of America), Gem Trade Laboratory, Diamond Grading Report. Gem Trade Laboratory is a division of GIA Enterprises, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of the nonprofit Gemological Institute of America, Inc. This describes the characteristics of the diamond at the time of the examination based upon 10x magnification.

I''ll post a screen shot of the certificate that I have available if you would like.

Bascially the reports are already done - but only the igi report is available before purchase.

Thanks!!

Sorry to have asked you to spill the beans!!!!!!

I was curious as to the actual price you would be paying for the ring, especially as it is a classic setting like that - if you don't want to post the purchase price and you say it is quite expensive, use the Pricescope Your Diamond tool above, select cushion for shape, then punch in your colour, carat and clarity, it will bring up the prices of similar diamonds for you to compare. That way if this ring seems very expensive, you could contact Mark or another of the vendors to see what they can come up with, that sort of setting shouldn't be a problem either in plat or WG - as you prefer.

I have heard of the 2 reports before, but I am not sure how it actually works as a GIA report is the most desirable for both consumers and the trade, make sure it is a full GIA grading report, as I am not sure if it is or not, maybe one of the experts can chime in there? If it is anything less than a full GIA report then the diamond would still be IGI graded as far as I am aware, and this could affect it's future value and trade in potential, so you need to clarify.

Price, for the complete ring with shipping and the certifications is 10,699 USD.

Thanks!

For what it''s worth ... I was able to go to GIA Report Check type in the report number on the IGI cert (which ref''s a GIA Report) and the carat weight and get a report that matches the stats you typed above.

So I''d guess it really does have a GIA report also ...and that the "I" color is a GIA flavor of "I" rather than a GIA "J" or "K" (which is what "I" means to some lesser labs)

Don''t know much about cushion pricing ... but it shouldn''t be hard to check if you try out the "pricscope your diamond" feature on Pscope''s front page & compare!

Good Luck!!

decodelighted - great tips - thanks!

I love your screen name!

It looks like similar cushions with a full GIA report are hovering around the 8-9k with the PS discount, so you could come out about the same costwise with the setting too I would think, if you wanted to check out another vendor. If your GF has seen the actual diamond and loves it, then that might be the one to go for, although as I said Mark can find you some fabulous cushions, you know best whether your GF was really in love with that particular diamond, then it might be well worth considering - sometimes just seeing a ring and loving it is enough.

Thank you very much for the information eveyone.

Any more thoughts?

Also - this is not the first cushion she has looked at - we have seen many cushion / asscher''s over the last few months.

Thanks!

I can''t say that I purchased this ring :) - but for whatever ring I do purchase I will need to resize the ring bigger. Can someone recomend a great company in NYC or nearby? . I just don''t want to go to some jerk who will switch out the diamond.

I tried to search but did not come up with any good specific recomendations - if I missed some good posts I am sorry.

Thanks!
