Rec. Mod. Brilliant princess

1.0 Carat
5.65-5.31-3.99
Polish- VG
Sym---VG
Depth--75.1 %
Table---79 %
Clarity--SI1
Cut---Very Good
Girdle--Slight thick to very thick
Color---G
Fluor---None

The salesman's initial quote is $4,400. (I believe I could get him lower) I saw virtually no inclusions under 10x loupe.
I wasn't setting out to get a rectangular princess cut but this truly is a very brilliant looking stone. Nice fire. I think the table percent is high but am I getting my money's worth here???

Your opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks from the noob!

hey yostevo, welcome to ps!!
it sounds like you''ve done some research. yes, that table is considered big.....but if you like the way the stone looks, that''s all that matters! the price is a bit higher than what you may find from an online vendor, but is probably in line with that of a b&m. if you''ve had the chance to look at very many princess cuts, you''ll know that they can vary greatly in looks. if you think you''ve found one that you like, don''t hesitate getting it! best of luck!!

yostevo....

I have to agree with "belle". You may find a better price by shopping online, but if you like the diamond than why not go for it. If it''s everything that your looking for and the price seems fair than it really comes down to what you want. Good luck...

Thanks guys. I do believe I''m going to keep on shopping. I appreciate the insight.

Yos....

I think you''ve made a smart choice.

You really need to see a lot of examples before you "train" your eyes to tell the difference between stones.

I would suggest going to the finer stores in your area and spend time looking at different types of stones.

Even for an expert it takes a lot of carefully examining lots of stones before you become adept at separating the wheat from the chaff.

It also depends on what you get to see. If you only see average stones, then the best you''ll see is average. You have to see bad stones as well as excellent ones and everywhere in between.

I know this is hard and very time consuming for consumers to accomplish and a lot of it is based on the accuracy of the seller''s opinion of the stones they show you.

If you want to go through this, you can do it but it will take a lot of time. If you don''t have the time, my best advice would be to engage and expert who has the training, education, experience and willingness to help you.

Ok....I went to the wife to be''s cousin because she works at very reputable local store. I kinda wanted to avoid working within her family because I would be compelled go with them out of respect in spite of price etc...But, today I broke down and went to see her. I wasn''t disappointed. I feel I''m going to spend a little more than I expected to but the rock was a looker and it won''t hurt being able to brag to her family that I stayed within the family. (Brownie points!) Here are the specs. and let me know what you think.

Who says that is "very good cut" ?

The table is very, very large - so much so the diamnd has virtually no mass above the girdle. The setting will look "empty" from the side. (see picture below) If that girdle wouldn''t be that thick (not great, in general, because it makes the diamonds look smaller), this one would be quite fragile too.

I would be surprised if this one had good brilliance - this diamond has no crown to speak of. It is probably possible to have found an intriguing exception... what do I know. Only you have seen this piece.

There must be some premium for buying locally, and for the Ex-Ex finish grades even if they do not show at all.

Anyway, ''guess you will have to go with this offer, once you asked the family for help...

Is that an actual photo, Val??!!

I''ve seen princess cuts that look exactly like that. All white with no fire or scintillation. They tend to look very dead. And, WOW what a change in the look of the mount!!

Do you think it's too late to back out???? I thought the diamond was very nice looking, but I did mention to them that the table was a high percentage. That's what made me skeptical about the price. I know I could go online and find something cheaper. I could still get the setting I like from the family jewelry store. Would that be an insult? I mean, don't I have to do what's best for me and her ring???

hello yos!!

the diamonds you have chosen to post on this forum are a little bit out of the range that the "cut" standards speak of. the beauty of princess diamonds place it in a gray area that you can''t judge them from the numbers. thus, it makes it hard to search for diamonds because it may have questionable numbers but it performs well. i suggest that you go to online vendors such as
dirtcheapdiamonds.
goodoldgold.com
whiteflash.com
superbcert.com

these are only a few of the great sites here on PS. give them a call or email and get ready for the extremely professional courtesy and help!!! keep us posted on the diamonds that you contine to find

Table: 64%
Polish: VG
Symmetry: VG
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

$5,000 online. This was considered an "Ideal cut" . What are your thoughts?
