Just wondering if I could get some opinions on what you think of these two settings. My girlfriend really likes the James Allen setting below but I know she also likes halo settings too and the Zoara one is her style. I'm looking at getting a .75 carat round brilliant (g-i color/ vs2 or SI1 clarity / Premium or VG cut). Which of these two settings do you think will look best with this size stone??? Going to get setting in 18K white gold. Thanks for your help. I really like that I can see diamonds through the JA scope online and really like there warranty but I have also heard good things about Zoara.

i think both settins you linked are great! Neither of them are halo settings- so did you have a specific halo setting in mind?

My personal preference, I like thinner more delicate shanks with the pave/stones in them. I think they make the ring sparkle, but also thin and delicate enough to make the main stone look bigger and standout. The James allen setting you linked seems a tad thick- I would be concerned that it would detract from the main stone.

I'm not familiar with Zaora, but I prefer that setting from the two that you posted. The head is more elegant, IMO. Where are you getting the diamond from? It can often be easier to get diamond and setting at the same vendor, although it's not necessary.

Wow, thanks for the responses. You guys are great! I misposted the Zoara link as a halo setting that link is below. But the Zoara link was one she liked as well. This halo setting I'm intersted below is from blue nile. I would like to buy diamond and setting from same place. So far JA seems like my favorite place to deal with. Thanks again for comments.

Someone stated below they thought the 2.5-3.1 mm width of the first JA setting may take away from the overall look of center stone??

My favourite one is the Zoara one, with the delicate band it really makes the diamond stand out. It is also a design that I think most people would love. The other two I think are acquired tastes. Although - you can't go wrong with the halo, it would look very impressive and if you're seeking to make the diamond look bigger that's a good way to go. Sorry I am not a fan of the James Allen ring. It creeps me out. It actually looks like the craftsmanship is superior - although that might be because it's the only one showing a close up photo - but I think it's icky how you can see diamonds on every side of the band - not to mention checking all those prongs to make sure they don't get loose over the years would be pretty painstaking!

Those with white gold rings may be able to help with this....Do I have to worry about the rhodium plating on my 18k ring wearing off frequently and needing re-plating?? Or is that not a common problem?? Am I better to pay the extra for platinum??

Thanks,
Ryan

In my (limited) experience you'll need to rhodium coat. I have 3 friends with white gold that I can think of off the top of my head. One of them regularly rhodium plates her rings (1 - 2 times a year) and it looks shiny and like new. The other two have had their rings for 3 years and 1 year respectively and they look quite dull/dark. I have heard my white gold-wearing friends complain that their ring is not as shiny, and when I told them they needed to rhodium coat their ring to fix the problem they looked at me like I had two heads. Obviously never heard of rhodium-coating!

I have a platinum ring, I've had mine for over a year and it is still shiny white and not dull - although I have had my ring resized a few times and taken it to Tiffany's for cleaning so it has been polished/cleaned often.

My white gold/regular rhodium-coating friend loves her white gold ring and prefers it over platinum. However her ring is just a solitaire, and she doesn't have extra stones/complex style. I have come to appreciate my platinum ring over time and I think it is better to pay the extra to begin with for less upkeep in future.

I like all the settings except that first James Allen.

Thanks again for the replies. So glad I found this site. I have really learned a great deal in the last month.
