Hi all - I'm building an engagement ring for my girlfriend. Below is a picture of what I'm targeting. Folks on the forum have already pointed me to Distinctive Gems as the go to place for ovals. I wanted to solicit feedback on this stone from Jonathan at Distinctive Gems: https://www.distinctivegem.com/collections/opulence/products/elyque-oval-3-34ct-i-vs2-1149451. Also here is the lab report: https://agslab.com/ym-vdgr/diamonds/104108327001/home

My initial observations/concerns:
  • It seems like a great value at 3.34 carats for $37K. Honestly I'm questioning why it's priced so low particularly given the quality
  • I'm afraid it might be too big. My girlfriend has smaller hands/fingers (she's smaller than a size 6), and wondering if I would be better off with something in the 2.5 carat range instead
    • I did raise this with Jonathan and he said the AGS Ideal Cuts require more depth to eliminate the bow tie effect. As such, even though the stone is 3.3 carats, it takes up less real estate on the finger. Would be good to understand how other feel/think about this
  • It's bit longer than what I was hoping for. The picture below looks to have a L/W ratio of ~1.35 vs. 1.40 in the stone I received from Jonathan. It might be too small to matter but would like to get your input
Thanks in advance for your help!

Pretty, but many people in the real world will question whether it’s real. Too big for a young person with smallish fingers.

I wear a 5.5 ring. My fingers are just average length. The 3.34 from Rhino would not look overwhelming on my hand. I don't care for the stone in the picture you posted. I'd kill for the 3.34 Rhino showed you:kiss2:

Did he send you a video or some photos? I love ovals, but only if they don’t have a bow tie.

I have an Elyque oval, the second one Jon ever cut. Mine is a 1.53 CT. My only regret is that I didn't go bigger. I should've gotten at least a 2 CT. But the light return is amazing. You can't go wrong at any size!

Here is a photo in low lighting in a club where my drummer son is about to play. As you can see, it's picking up every bit of available light and throwing off beautiful colors!

I would not worry about the slight l-w ratio. It's minor to me personally.

It's a sizeable stone, but only you and your intended know what she's comfortable wearing. I would absolutely wear that, but everyone is different. Has she tried on something similar in size?

I dont think 1.35 to 1.4 ratio is big enough of a difference to make a big difference in looks (IMO). Here is a relative look of the 3.34 on a size 5 1/2 finger.
Quite a "big" look!

The depth & “I” color may drop the price a little, in spite of this being an ideal cut oval.
I see no issue with tint, nor do I assume any dimness with the depth. Those are the only reasons I can think of that could explain the lower price for higher quality.
Jonathan is honest, reputable, and a cut above, in the industry.
He is amazing to work with, and he is always working on new ideas.
His ovals are the first, and only Ideal Cut on Earth. You will not find better cut ovals, anywhere.
He has taken the work and frustration out of this process by designing an AGS, ID Cut stone.
The only factors left for you to deal with are the color, carat, and clarity. These boil down to personal preference.
I will encourage you to consider your intended’s lifestyle. Will the larger stone have potential to get damaged in her workplace? Will it be awkward to wear every day? What size stones do you see in her social circle? Will it look in proportionate on her hand? Will she consider an upgrade in the future, or will this be her “forever” stone?
Depending on how you answer those questions, I would encourage you to consider a larger stone for her initial stone, as DSS (diamond shrinkage syndrome) sets in, and what was once a big stone is no longer so large, once adjusting to the size on her finger.
You CANNOT go wrong with any of Jonathan’s ovals.
You just have to decide which one fits her, and her lifestyle best.

ETA: the EO from Jonathan has a l x w ratio of 1.4:1.
If you feel it is too elongated, you should focus on stones that have l x w ratios of 1.30-1.35:1.

Hey, can you do me a favor and send me a couple of pics of your Elyque? I’m trying to get a couple of ideas on a setting, please thank you

If you are concerned with the size, I would suggest you go down a little in size and go for G or H color.

Thank you, it’s beautiful!
Thanks! David Klass did the setting. I had seen his engraved bands on Etsy and asked if he could put a peg head on one for my oval. I'm really happy with the way it turned out. At some point, I'm going to have him make me a coordinating band.

I think it would look better with a diamond band not just this regular cheap band

@Nida Please try and keep the negative comments to a minimum. Some of your comments could be worded a bit kinder.

I love what @Starfacet created with her oval; that setting , so unique !!
Jon just sent my oval 2.02 ct (purchased thru him) and a setting he and I created......to be made. I enjoyed working with him and his expertise on helping me pick a great diamond.

@swami8791 you can see all the settings he personally offers and has a few other designers on his site. I think you need to really address the issues that @Matthews1127 brought up to get "THE RING" perfected!

Hi again, what color is your band? It is absolutely beautiful ! I too love yellow gold and am leaning on this setting, but having a hard time because I want “unique”. Thoughts on this setting? BA9C17FA-A543-4CA7-AA18-E3A29CC3B327.jpeg

It's David's 18K yellow gold, which is more true yellow than other 18K YG jewelry I've ever owned. Not sure what his mix is, but it's truly gorgeous. I told him eventually, I want ear hoops just like my ring. That setting looks nice from the top!

Pretty setting. Do you have a side view? I really like the setting but not sure if I* would consider it "unique". I think it really depends on how unique you
are looking for. I kind of like a little different but not so different that it wont be a classic and look good for years.

I do think that setting falls into the "would look good for years" category. Just curious of the side view.

Hi, yes it wasn’t unique enough for me. So I changed again, I’ve seen this Dahlia/Tulip design in a RB but only once in an Oval. Jonathan is working on the setting to be placed around my Oval Elyque. Thoughts?E2E5E92C-91EC-431D-B622-399BA1632F96.png3CBD57B5-0718-4C86-AF2E-328994816973.png

I looove it! It's going to be so pretty!

I think that design is beautiful with an oval! It is unique/slightly different but not enough different that it will go out of style anytime soon.

Hi, wonder if I could get a real honest opinion, you seem to know a lot about all this diamond stuff! I’m trying to decide on a setting for my Elyque, would you give me feedback if I sent you a couple of pics on ideas I have for the Elyque?
