Opinion on J Princess with Strong Fluorescence

Hello all,

I've mainly been focused on finding a princess cut diamond in area of 1.0ct with a budget of $4300 (to replace the stone that is missing from my engagement ring -- so sad). I came across this diamond that is a little smaller, and a little over budget, but it is a Princess of Hearts -- .91 ct, J, Strong Fluor, VS2.

Here's a link which has the ASET, GIA cert, etc:

Risk it on the Princess of Hearts that's a J with strong fluoro or keep on looking?

GOG has another princess that is 1.06ct, F SI2 right at budget.

I already have these on hold with James Allen while I'm waiting for a gemologist to inspect them -- they are all H & I because that is what I was seeing at the time with excellent cut, >1.0 and better than SI2:

Thanks for any advice you can provide! The Princess of Hearts will probably be gone by the time I finish typing...

Based on the photos of the JA stones, I would not recommend pursuing those any further. Their contrast patterns are not very pleasing to me, and their ASETs are likely to be not so great.

Between the 2 stones at GOG, there's one more factor to consider. The POH and princess will look very different in terms of their contrast pattern and light reflection. The POH will look more like a H&A round and the other one like a traditional princess. Personally I prefer my princesses to have the little splintery reflections that make them different from round stones, rather than the H&A pattern similar to a round. For that reason as well as the fact that the other stone is larger and whiter, I'd choose the GOG "regular" princess. BUT please ask Jon why it didn't get his lifetime guarantee and only got the limited one! It might not be eye-clean, for example...

ETA: I don't see much more at JA that I like. Maybe check out this one? Looks bright in general but may have some leakage around the edges of the table: http://www.jamesallen.com/diamonds/H-SI1-Good-Cut-Princess-Diamond-1451876.asp

Thanks for your reply!! Interesting regarding the brightness of the diamond you linked me too; I didn't realize on the JA images that you could really determine anything other than the clarity and symmetry. I didn't notice that the GOG Princess was limited -- I'll look into it! Thanks!

If this is going into a setting with other stones- I would consider the color and cut of those stones when selecting your new center stone.

I love the PoH stone! But the choice would have a lot to do with what kind of setting you have.

It is just going to go into a simple tiffany style solitaire setting that I will purchase with whichever diamond I finally choose. I'm not going to put it back in the originally setting -- I'm not very superstitious but just felt like I'd really be pissed at myself if I lost it again in the same setting, lol.

Well, in that case- you are pretty wide open in terms of color and type of princess cut. It really just depends on what you like.

As for SBF- I would just verify with the vendor that there are not adverse affects.

Hey, I just found these three on Blue Nile -- which I was avoiding due to lack of information. These first two are AGS cut grade 0. And the third has a GCAL showing excellent light performance. Again I'm stretching the budget but would just pair it with their 2.0mm solitaire setting which will keep cost down

After loosing my stone, I puchased another on James Allen which had a crystal inside burst under the pressure of them setting it early this week so now I have to start over once again -- feels like I've been searching for an eternity.

Do these look better than what I'm seeing on James Allen right now?

Thanks!! I really value your opinions!

I'm only estimating brightness by looking at the photo, but it's hard because some of their photos are blurry.

Sorry about the one you picked out breaking at JA! I heard of that happening once with a stone that we PSers recommended, and I can imagine how frustrated that must make you feel.

As for the ones you picked from Blue Nile, they can all be contenders, but you have very little information about the BN Signature. I can't tell much from the small photos on the GCAL report. Since I don't recommend buying a non-AGS graded princess without seeing at least photos and preferably an ASET first, and BN doesn't provide those, I can't give a strong recommendation for a BN Signature princess.

I do like the computer-generated ASETs of the other two. The 1.01 is larger on one dimension but will appear off-square due to the square ratio of 1.05. The 1.02 is nearly a perfect square and I prefer the appearance of the computer-generated ASET over the other one. So I would choose the 1.02 if you're going with the BN stones. Both are AGS0, so that's great.

Have you asked for an ASET on the JA one I recommended? You could compare it to the computer-generated ASETs on the report, but I have a feeling it's not going to be as good. The 1.02 would be a good choice, and so would the ones from GOG (if you can get a lifetime guarantee on the F/SI2 and it's eye-clean). And there's nothing wrong with a POH; they're beautiful stones, but I just wanted you to know that they will have a significantly different look

Thank you all for your input. Yes I've seen the quadex online - they look gorgeous also. I bet I would probably love one of them (or the Princess of Hearts), but at this time I'm going to stick with a traditional princess cut - because at least I've seen what they look like in person (it is what I had before my diamond went missing form my setting) and can get more carat weight / larger mm size and better color for my budget - though I know not a significant different.

So, James Allen came back with reviews on the three I had on hold and had really great comments about the 2nd one at the top of my list - the H color stone (and I've actually had them look at several over the past few weeks). So, after all this I think I'm going to try that one - it is right at my budget, and I really love working with my contact. I wonder if it is too late to still get an Aset image...I'll try. I guess when I first started looking customer service told me that they only did advanced reports on max 3 diamonds (and I didn't purchase any of those) I thought I couldn't ask again. I can be a real wimp, lol.

The H does look like the best of those 3. I hope you love it in person!

Good pick. Hope you love it!!
