Hi Folks,
I would appreciate any help or opinions that someone could give me on this. I have been lurking here reading all the posts for mnay months but could never find an option to register and post before. Last night i finally bought a diamond, (not paid yet) nad today the registration option suddenly appeared!! ( or became apparent) - Typical huh,

Anyhoo, if anyone could give me a comment on this diamond i would be very very appreciative!

Blue nile stock number - LD01032683

Carat weight: 1.55
Cut: Ideal
Colour: G
Clarity: VS1
Depth %: 61.3%
Table %: 57%
Symmetry: Excellent
Polish: Very good
Girdle: Medium to slightly thick

Fluorescence: None
Crown Angle - 34.0
Pavillion - 40.8

A B&M retailer pushing for the businees has just told me that a diamond cannot have a Medium to slightly thick girdle and an Ideal cut. They said that that girdle can only be a very good cut at best! It odes score very well on the holloway cut advisor though.

I''m now considerably scared and any helpor opinion would really be appreciated!

Many Thanks

Conor

I don''t know much about the girdle issue, but the HCA does give it a good score. If you can''t wait for responses from the board, run a search and see if you can find the topic in PS''s archives.

The thing to remember about the HCA is that it is a rejection tool, not a selection tool.

It seems like a well cut diamond based on the numbers. If you plan to upgrade it in future, I would buy elsewhere but other than that, I think you did pretty good. I take it you are not looking for the superideals otherwise you'll be looking for an Excellent rating in the Polish as well. I can't say much more because BN does not give Idealscope pictures.

The cut on the stone looks great, and I wouldn''t worry about the girdle. Men-slightly thick is just fine. Ditto what others have said about upgrade policies. If you ever plan to want to upgrade, I''d purchase from a place that has a good policy, BN doesn''t have one.

Thanks Folks, That does put my mind at rest. I was just freaked at bieng told that amedium to slightly thick girdle cant have an Ideal cut rating. This was about 10minutes after i read a story on the web about the GIA bribery scandal!

More likely the Jeweller was lying to me in an attempt to diss the internet resellers.

I did think about the return policy but my gf maintains that once she has the stone it is for life and she woud never change it. Wheather or not she sticks to that policy remains to be seen though.. Hopefully she will get a few years out of it anyway.

On another note, where would i go to get this appraised in Toronto? CAn any jewellers do it and any chance of the stone bieng nicked and swapped for glass?

Cheers,

Conor

No, DO NOT go to a jeweler for an appraisal. They don''t really know what they''re doing 1/2 the time, and the other half they might spend trying to convince you your stone sucks so they can sell you one.

An independent appraiser is one that DOES NOT sell jewelry or work with/for a jewelry store.

Unfortunately the PS list of appraisers does not cover Canada, but maybe someone can chime in.

Ideal cut diamonds can have thin, medium, or slightly thick girdles. Shame on that jeweler (and don''t buy there!). I think this stone sounds really nice and the price is very good. The very good polish wouldn''t bother me a bit.

Very much appreciated for all the help folks. I am feeling very good now.

My current concern is now how the missus is gonna react to the diamond. Ive been building her up explaining the perfect scores on the HCA, The all ideal/Excellent ratings and how perfect this stone is gonna be.

Silly me, i got carried away with my own excitement and now she is fully expecting to be temporarily blinded when we open the box!! Today we looked at a $50k ring in a Toronto jewellers and se didnt like it because it didnt sparkle enough.

DOH!!!
