Hello all - lurker for awhile - Can someone give me their opinion on this ring? Here''s the little I know about it: I think the diamonds are pre WWII - but the setting was re-done in the late 1960''s.

Is there someone in the Tri-state area you can recommend for appraisals of older cuts?

Thanks

What a great ring! Are there any markings on the band? I found some similar rings on this website:Adin

I don''t think there are markings on the band - I''ll double check next time I get a look at it. I know it was reset about 40 yrs ago though, so the setting is by no means original. I think it''s white gold though. Were bypass settings popular in the 60''s?

Anybody have any idea how old the diamonds are? I know clarity is impossible to tell from a photo, but I do see some warmth there in the color... I wasn''t too sure - one looks a little whiter than the other, and one a bit bigger than the other.

I don''t have any suggestions, but I did just want to say that you have a beautiful ring!!!

Where are my comments on this topic? Strange....

It''s tough to tell from the photo if they are modern cut or transitional cuts.
I had my ring w/ transitional cut appraised by Ted Baer in NYC and he also looked at another ring I had that had an OMC in it.
I don''t know which "tri-state" area you are in, but the appraiser listings under resources are helpful.

They look like Old European Cuts to me. I have OMC''s, a transition cut e-ring and a OEC e-ring and your ring looks just like an OEC to me. Really pretty. The style looks around 1940''s to me. Bypass rings with diamonds were popular then. Is the ring both yellow and white gold?

Dave Atlas in Horsham PA is really good

Thanks Lisa...

The ring was reset in 1968 or so...but I know the diamonds are older. If the stones were from the early 1900''s, can one determine OEC or OMC?

I will bring it in for appraisal, just have to get myself organized, etc

They for sure are not OMC. OMC are usually more cushion shaped with very large culets. It would most likely be either a OEC or a transition cut. Can you find out when the first ring was made? Transition cuts (one is in my avatar) are beautiful cuts. Not quite a modern brilliant but not quite the OEC. As they got better tools they cut diamonds better and things like the culets got smaller and they started putting facets on the girdle

Since it is not in the original setting it might be harder to identify unless taken to an appraiser who specialises in vintage pieces.

GORGEOUS stones- look at the crown angles on those babies

Definitely Old European cuts. As far as an appraiser, I do not have a recommendation, other than to encourage you to go to someone who specializes in estate jewelry.
