I am buying a three stone engagement ring (all emerald cut diamonds) but I can see the ring band/setting through the diamonds! The band has three little holes under the cutlets (i think thats the right term) but those little holes dont really help. I''m wondering if Emerald cut diamonds should have an open bottom. I''ve looked on the internet and most of the EC three stone ring settings Ive seen have open bottoms but some do not. My diamond broker says that the "band" I see is really just the "shine of the diamond" and not the actual platinum band, but I think he is full of it. Can you help?

I can''t really tell what are you actually seeing....

How about these two EC photos - there is a "dark" band accross each. Is this what your ring looks like ?

Hi, I don''t like settings without the little holes (they are called azures). I like to be able to clean behind (underneath) my diamonds and having an open setting allows this to be accomplished. Also, the holes are useful if you want a jeweler/appraiser to give you an estimated weight of a mounted stone using a calculation. They use calipers to measure the stone from top to bottom to help with the formula that they use to give an estimated weight.

Without seeing your ring it’s difficult to give you a straight answer. If the stones are properly cut, you should not be able to see anything behind the stone when looking through the top. This is known as a ‘window’ and they are pretty common in other varieties of gemstones. They are quite unusual in diamonds and it would be a symptom of an extremely poor cut. This actually is pretty unlikely. There is an effect in emerald cuts called a ‘bowtie’ that may be what you’re seeing. It can look like a dark band across the center of the stone. If you don’t trust your dealers advice, consider hiring an outside expert to assist you. A professional appraisal at this point would probably be worth your money.

The holes in the back is there primarilly for cleaning purposes. It doesn’t have anything to do with the optics.

denverappraiser has given you some very good advice why not seek out an appraiser and let them put your mind at rest, hopefully?? Let us know how you make out, good luck!!!

I think its like the one on the right. Only its apparant in all three stones so it looks like a continuous band. Is that the sign of a bad diamond?
