Saw this diamond at my local jewelers with the following EGL specs:

Stone 58515601D
Weight 1.20 CT
Shape PEAR BRILLIANT03
Color D
Clarity VS2
Measurements 8.77 x 5.77 x 3.89 mm
Depth 67.4%
Table 58%
Crown 16.1%
Pavilion 44.5%
Crown Angle 37.6°
Pavilion Angle 38.7°
Girdle MEDIUM TO THICK FACETED
Polish VERY GOOD
Symmetry VERY GOOD
Fluorescence NONE
Culet SMALL
Cut Grade N/A
The price for this was around $8000 or so...
What do you think?

This is what I'm looking for:
pear or oval shape, 1.2 + carats, color D - H (if the H is a true GIA H), cut excellent (as good as it can be for a pear or oval shape), VS2 or better clarity (or somewhat lower if it's completely eye clean), all for around $5,000 - $6,000. Is this possible? I've been searching around and not having much luck on the loose diamond sites.

I love pears so I'm all about oogling as much as possible!
Have you read this thread - gives you dimensions that are the normal ranges for ideal/premium cuts:
https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/pear-cut-diamond
That said, your stone above has a depth of 67.4%.

I just did a quick PS diamond search with these parameters:
GIA lab
F/G
1.17 - 1.27 ct
VS2 - SI1
Table - 55% - 60%
Depth - 59 - 63%
Sym - Ideal - good
Pol - Ideal - good
Fl - N - M
Price $5040 - $5980 and got 6 pears.

Give it a try and see how these compare with your stone's info. Remember that you are comparing an EGL D with a GIA F/G.

Thanks so much! You've really got me on the right track. The guide of proper dimensions is so helpful - I found a lot more of what I'm looking for by using that search criteria. Is Good Old Gold reasonable with prices? I plan to visit them this weekend and continue my hunt for the perfect pear or oval.

Good Old Gold is the best place to look for any fancy cut diamond, in my opinion, because they really will find stones with the best cut and light performance! However, are you making an appointment and asking them to call in stones for you? Because they will need a few days notice to be able to get some stones in for you to look at. Their prices are good for the level of service they provide. And especially for fancy cuts, it pays off in the end to have an expert searching for you.

Yes, I have been in contact with them about my preferences and am so excited to see what they find, but now that I know more of the dimensions and ratio that I like, I will have to update my search criteria. It's such a process! I'm relieved to know GOG is as good as I keep hearing.
Is it completely unreasonable to want an eye clean VS2 or SI1, H or better color (GIA rated), 1.2 + carat, excellent/ideal cut pear/oval for my budget ($5000 - $6000)? This is all new to me, so not sure what to expect.

Not unreasonable at all! And in the search I did, it seemed totally do-able. Discuss w GOG on site what they'd suggest if you had to compromise on something - what do they recommend you alter. You may not have to adjust your wish list at all, but just keep an open mind that if you are stuck on an H, perhaps there is the perfect I out there.. that kind of thing.

Sounds awesome! I'm envious of those that live close to the NYC area --- feel free to bring your camera and try on all sorts of rings! (Not that we like that kind of stuff on PS :Up_to_something: )

Ahh getting a little uneasy! GOG has suggested a stone that is not certified. I like it, but the fact that it's uncertified makes me feel uncomfortable. Anyone have experience with this? Thoughts?? THANK YOU!

Jonathon has an amazing eye and all the tools that you need to make a well informed decision. He is very honest and trustworthy, I would certainly consider an uncerted stone through him, and that's saying alot. If you love the stone and are truly interested in it, you could suggest that he send it off for grading and that you will pay for the fee and base your final decision on what the report says. Just know ahead of time that it takes time for a stone to be graded and that if you are not comfortable with how the report comes back, that you will be out the cost of the report.

Awesome plan! I'd go with what Christina is suggesting - the cost of the cert will be well worth it if it turns out to be as wonderful as Jonathon would recommend for you. I have never bought from GOG but have read a lot of wonderful reviews.

Not a bad investment, IMO.

I agree GOG will find you the best performing pear for your budget. Here is a site I love to use to search because you can see many diamonds on the same page and all their stats...I like to look for the stones that face up the largest for the price and hopefully are eyeclean. I love pear shaped stones.

Buydiamondsdirect.com usacerteddiamonds.com is also a great search site and both of these sites have the best prices...so you can see what you can buy in your budget. Here are some I found on buydiamonddirect.com...I put my fav's in bold. You can use these to compare prices:
I love strong blue fl. and so this is my very favorite and also faces up the largest as far as the width (love those chubby pears):

I got my pear from GOG last year at this time and it was not certified as well. I talked to Jonathon on the phone and he assured me as to what I was getting. I could not have been happier, I say go for it.

Buying an uncerted stone from GOG is not a bad idea at all :D It will save you money

**Disclaimer** I only say this because it's GOG. If it were any other vendor, (yes, even some of the other PS vendors) I'd say no.

Thank you all so much for your help and advice! I'm sorry I was absent for a while, things got really busy on my end, but I did get to go visit the pear in question (uncerted) at GOG. It was my first time at GOG, and I was impressed. The store was super busy, but the salespeople gave me great advice and took the time to really show the diamond carefully.
Ok, so here are my questions. It was a pretty and sparkly one, but it did have leakage that concerned me. Now, I know all pears will leak to one extent or another, but when they put it in a temporary setting, I could see my skin through the wide end of the diamond (on the edge of widest part). Hmmm. Ok, so here's the question, what do you guys think about the images below insofar as leakage in concerned in a pear? Is this fairly typical or more than would be expected/desirable? I realize there isn't a set protocol for what makes a good pear and it's mostly personal preference, but am just looking for some of your thoughts :)
Thanks!!

Also, is there a way to post these aset and diamxray images without posting the whole listing? thanks so much!
