I''m looking at a diamond with a GIA report from February 2004. The report appears to lack some of the detailed information I''ve seen on more recent ones. For example, there''s no cut grade, and no picture of the diamond with detailed measuements I can enter into the HCA.

I''ve set forth the available information below. Here are my questions:

1. Am I correct that there''s no way to evaluate the cut from the limited information available on this old GIA report?

2. Have GIA standards as to color and clarity grading changed at all since 2004?

3. Is it necessary to verify that the stone (which has been set in a ring) has not been damaged or degregated in any way since grading and, if so, how is that done?

4. Finally, where were diamond prices in 2004, compared to the present time, for this type of stone?

ROUND BRILLIANT
7.68-7.70 X 4.79mm
1.71 ct.
Depth 62.3
Table 56
Thin to Medium, Faceted
Cutlet-None
Polish-Excellent
Symmetry-Excellent
VS-2
G
No Flourescence

1) yes, unless you can see the stone, or the vendor can supply an IS/ASET image.

2) Probably no.

3) Good to do unless you really trust the vendor. Get it done with an independent appraiser or ask the vendor to send it back to GIA for a regrading.

1. Am I correct that there''s no way to evaluate the cut from the limited information available on this old GIA report? Ask the vendor if they have access to the diamond if they can run a Sarin scan to get the measurements needed and also an Idealscope image.

2. Have GIA standards as to color and clarity grading changed at all since 2004? Hard to say, I would imagine not.

3. Is it necessary to verify that the stone (which has been set in a ring) has not been damaged or degregated in any way since grading and, if so, how is that done? I would wish to do so.

1a. You are correct, there is no way to accurately assess the proportions grade of a diamond off of an old GIA lab report. However you can obtain the missing information by asking for a Sarin / OGI / Helium / computerized proportions analysis report which takes about 30 seconds to run if the diamond is loose.

1b. Ask for the facet-by-facet, 3D, or Manufacturers report for the Sarin / OGI / Helium so that you can determine what the high and low measurements which define the average measurements for crown / pavilion angle - it should be a minimal variance.

2. No.

3. We recommend that customers have the characteristics of ANY diamond they purchase verified by an independent Gemologist / Appraiser when the paper is fresh, you should definitely have the characteristics of the diamond verified when the paper is five years old.

4. Lots of information available on this subject via the "Prices" drop down menu located at the top of this page...
