Hello all, :wavey:

I've been lurking here on the forums for quite some time now. My girlfriend and I are planning on getting engaged around Christmas time and she's been involved (with my full support) with the choosing of the setting that she loves. Me being the guy (and I've found out the hard way) realized a looong time ago that I can't read her mind...so I figured it was the best...safest option. I am in no way an expert at this...but I have taken the time to educate myself over the past 2 months.

Lo and behold after much searching she's found a setting that she really likes. It's a custom job from a designer associated with a local jewelery store. I've been searching online thru all the resources here on the site as well as peoples input thru-out the thread for other options, rather than to just be locked into the one place. This is the ring in WG which she doesn't like so its Plat or Pal. And she really likes the pave that go across the stone, I know I should know what that's called but I don't :?

Needless to say I've been searching all the resources and the closest one, even though SHE found it, is here

http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/home/ring-details/?product_id=5442

Although she doesn't like how far the pave stones go down on the ring. /sigh. She's really leaning towards the whole vibe of #1 there. I personally would prefer to get it from someone recommended here than take a shot with a BM local. No slight on them...I just prefer the thumbs up ratings from those in the know.

Has anyone come across a ring like this in their online diamond adventures and could possibly point me in that direction?

Also, looking at a princess stone with the RT pricescope approved"zazz" to it. :D I'd like to keep my budget around the 6-7k area and the stone is something that in the future I will plan on upgrading for her. She is very setting addicted..go figure!

Thank you for taking the time to read this...and hopefully respond. It is much appreciated.

Best,
L

Brian does custom design too, though you could probably ask him for a slight modification on the setting above to what your gf likes.

Budget is just for the stone or total?

That would be total.

Thx for the reply SC

I think the part to which you refer is called the basket.

Also, the price tag from the B&M store is visible in the pix -- $2275 for white gold is ridiculous. You could have the setting custom made in PT950 for appx the same price.

With a $7k budget, however, and plans to upgrade in the future...does she really want to spend that much on the setting? She could get a bigger diamond now and upgrade the setting later (then the diamond again later).

Also, most merchants (with upgrade policies) will honor the price of the diamond toward the upgrade, but not the price of the setting. So if you spend more on the setting now, you won't get it back when you upgrade, and you also won't be able to re-use the setting easily. You would have to find a diamond or other gemstone of the same dimensions to set in the old setting (which could be really difficult with a cushion or other rectangular stone, but doable with a princess or RB).

With the future upgrade in mind, have you asked her if she prefers a bigger diamond now in a WG solitaire (which would save as much money as possible wrt the setting) or a smaller diamond now in a pave platinum band? It would translate to appx an additional $2k toward the future upgrade.

But back to your original question, the setting she wants can be described as a cathedral with a pave band and pave basket, with four struts supporting the prongs (no diamonds on the struts). It's kind of like this:

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/pave-set-ring-White-Gold-4-Prong-2-6mm.html

With diamonds on the basket. Modifying a stock setting by adding the pave on the basket is not a big deal. James Allen (or any other custom place) should be able to do it easily Btw, the JA rotating thing is a CAD rendering, so the finished piece will not be as chunky as it appears in the pix.

I see something online but I don't want to post the number for the world to see just in case.....I don't see a way to PM you. It's the same ring VVS diamond but no pave diamonds. I thought it might be worth a look-see.

any of the PS vendors who do custom settings should be able to make something similar to that with the diamonds on the basket, for a better price. Does she want 3-sided pave or 1-sided pave?

Thank you so far for all of your responses.

Antelope1: That was the feeling I was getting with the B&M place with that ring. After researching here it just seemed so out of whack. I'm ready to pull the trigger but my gut was really leading me to post this here. The reason I mentioned the upgrade was that was the type of diamond that I was looking for. Something with a lifetime policy. Sorry for the vagueness. And yes she really really wants that setting...we looked at a ton of em. I'm going to check out JA's site today. Tyvm.

Allowingtoo: I know they don't do PM on this site. I'll throw my email address in my profile. I'd be interested to see what you found. ty

Slg47: She's really in love with the 3 sided. =)

I should have posted this post a lot earlier..I really appreciate all the help.

I think that you can easily find a setting similar to that one. You didn't put what shape center stone you were thinking of.

For Platinum have you looked at Leon Mage, he has several that are VERY close??? http://www.artofplatinum.com/portfolio/index.php

I also think that Brian Gavin could do that ring as well as Jewels by Erica Grace.

Good Luck

it sounds like the BGD setting could be easily modified to make it exactly what your GF wants :)

ETA does she plan to wear a wedding band with the ring? generally with the 3-sided pave a spacer band is recommended

That's weird. How come we can't PM? I can't even change my preferences to allow him to PM me.

BTW even though that's a strong Blue it's a brand name diamond so I'm not worried about it being hazy. I'd buy it myself but I'm looking at another diamond at the moment :)

One that has the tip broke off it.

There is no way to PM. Always the case to prevent under the table solicitation by vendors. You are violating forum policies by posting your email.

Msg the admin to help.

Oops. My bad. I didn't know that. I'm sorry. I was going to edit that post and POOF it was gone.

Darn. This is one of those auctions that is not written up right. Ending tomorrow. 1 carat.

OK, it's not so much the ring, but the diamond. Unless you wanted bigger than a 1 carat. Strong Blue though. I have a strong Blue and I love it. Looks like a much higher price diamond.

Fantastic info people thank you...

An update. I've informed her that I have asked for some "expert" opinons on the ring, before I go down to the B&M rolling. Now note, she knows about the ring, but has no idea when or where she's going to get it  . And the one concern that she has is that she can't try it on. Now I feel confident with the right communication with the right PS designer I could get the perfect ring. But what would you say to allay her fears of not being able to "test drive it".

I'm going to put together an email to send out to one or two of the designers mentioned in this thread and see if and what can be done.

Lovemybling: thank you for pointing me in the direction of those sites. I'm going to check them out and keep my fingers crossed.

Slg: Yes she is going to wear a wedding band. Does that mean she needs an extra "buffer" ring lol?

Allowingtoo: Yeah I thought the PM thing was strange until I read the PM thread. Then it all makes sense. Thanks for the link, I'm spending some time tonight reading up on that type of stone.

Thanks again for all the info. The quest just got even more interesting.

:D

yes an extra 'buffer' band usually referred to as a spacer band is recommended

Another added question pertaining to the stone

Her ring size is 4.5. What is a nice size for a center stone that's not too...over powering? I'm really set on a high performance diamond so I'd rather have that sparkle/fire feature over size. With her small fingers I wouldn't want to go too obnoxiously big...although I'm sure that really isn't possible! But having an idea while I'm looking would help.

Princess cut

Thank you muchly
