What would you say was a fair price for an OEC, 4.31ct, I/J, SI2, 11.5 x 6.09 ? Looking at a stone that seems expensive, but I think maybe that is what happens at that size. There is no cert, so I would have to get the specs verified.
Here are a few pics that I took. It was reflecting my orange shirt and the green box it was in. Sorry, no profiles. Ignore the setting. The stone was just propped in there.
Seller is asking $35,000, which seems like a lot, and I am looking to pay less. However, when I compare to OWD prices, this price is not that bad. Of course, OWD gives a cert, and this stone does not have that. I would have to work out something to return if the cert does not match what the seller says. What I am really wondering is if this is pretty standard for this size/quality?
Hi, the 3.41 J VS2 I was looking at was $37200.00 and I looked at a 4 carat cushion that was a J SI1 that was $40 000, both stones were certified. This stone is larger than both of those stones. The price seems to go alot up when you get to 4 + carats. I think its is a fair price for that size stone provided it is eye clean and it is not a lower colour than stated.
The cut looks great. Can't guess price easily without a lab report because usually sellers over estimate color and clarity. Is it being sold by a reputable estate seller? Will they send it to an appraiser of your choice or offer a two week unconditional return policy? Will they unset the stone and send it to EGL?
Yay! I'm so happy you came by Dreamer! The stone is from an estate seller - reputable - I don't know but I can ask around. The stone is not set - it is just propped in that setting to help my with my bad photo skills. He will let me take it only for two days, but I am going to try to get it evaluated tomorrow. I found a recommended appraiser that will do a Saturday walk in (hopefully). As soon as I can get that info I will post and see what you all think about price.
Closest is NY, about a 5 hour drive. I think the best I can do for now is an appraiser that sees the stone with fresh eyes. I will push the seller some more, but he was pretty adamant.
Update. I bought the stone, took it to two appraisers. One did not have master stones handy and eyeballed it at J/SI2. The one who used equipment and master stones said K, SI2. Gem Fever and I met up and compared to her GIA L and decided it looks J/K to us - a little whiter than one letter grade difference from her L. So it is pretty close to what the seller said, and I am happy enough with that and plan to keep it. I want to email him and find out if he knows any history on the stone.
I'm interested in your opinions on rehab for a girdle. The appraiser's opinion was that he likes leaving it "authentic." What do you all think? For now my plan is to put it in a plain solitaire until I have the money for a setting. I will worry about the girdle then.
By rehab I meant polish out chips. It has a few chewed up edges. The girdle goes from knife edge to thicker and unpolished to chipped areas. I am debating what to do with it. My husband likes the idea of keeping it as is - more authentic as an old stone. I am worried about whether leaving it alone makes it susceptible to more damage. Right now I am leaning towards leaving it alone and putting it in a temporary 6 or 8 prong solitaire - extra prongs for protection and temporary so I can decide on setting and get some cash .
