Hi there. Just out of curiosity, is it feasible to put an OEC diamond in a modern round setting? For example, if a setting is made for a 1 carat round brilliant, will it also fit a 1 carat round OEC? Are there any other considerations that need to be made if you are choosing an OEC? Sorry if this is worded a little naively, and thanks in advance for your answers!

I think an OEC in a modern setting could look quite beautiful and definitely possible. Here is a link to facetfire''s gorgeous OEC in a modern type of setting, it''s a stunner!

As far as an OEC fitting into the setting of a round brilliant, you need to be attentive to the measurements and the diameter of the stone since OEC''s have slightly different proportions than modern brilliant cuts. A jeweler should be able to help you with this.

OECs usually have much deeper cuts than the modern round, so you''ll have to check the diameter measurement before ordering the setting. I think it will look pretty in modern settings but here''s another caution: most OECs have very thin girdles which has a tendency to chip more easily. Most modern settings are very open on the sides and could increase the risk of the OEC girdle getting damaged.

Chrono is right about being careful with the ex. thin girdle''s on the OEC''s. I reset my OEC in a 6 prong Tiffany type setting when I got engaged years ago. When I decided to change my setting my appraiser discovered several new tiny chips on my stone. they can be polished out but the stone would have been better off in a setting that protected it. that said, you''ll need to check the diameter. My OEC was 1.2 carats but measured 6.5mm (the same as a modern round) so we ordered a head for a 1 carat stone.

Thanks for the feedback! I''m mostly just daydreaming right now, but should the occasion arise where I would actually be getting an OEC stone, I was thinking of a semi-bezel, something like this from Sholdt Designs:

Oh, one more thing...Got any suggestions for vendors that have OEC diamonds? Just for future reference....

Thanks!

I had Whiteflash and DCD/James Allen search for virtual OECs for me. They are able to call the broker to verify the cert information and can call in the stones for Sarin, etc.

I''ve also dealt with Ari at www.Singlestone.com in LA, Fay Cullen and Leigh at www.AntiqueEngagementRings.com

My experience with all these vendors have been excellent.

Thanks!
