NY/LA quality jewelry stores with rings on display?

Hi everyone!

Can you recommend any jewelry stores in either New York or Los Angeles that display a wide assortment of engagement rings/settings (that are relatively quality/dainty, not the typical bulkier settings found in regular shops)? For a couple who is very visual and needs to see styles in person before making a decision. I've taken them to the high end stores, but they really want to see what is out there before deciding. And I'd much prefer they visit good quality stores, so they aren't turned off from a design if they see a poorly made example.

I believe the typical names on here (SK, LM, VC, etc) are custom artists and thus might not have many examples in their shop.

Thus, any recs? I was thinking IDJ in NY (haven't been, but saw some kind of display case in their yelp pics). Anything else?

Thanks in advance!!!!

XIV Karat in Beverly Hills has an enormous selection of rings/diamonds/settings available. I haven't purchased from there, so I'm not affiliated, but I've been in there several times to get jewelry fixed.

Greenwich St. Jewelers in lower Manhattan (on Trinity Place, just around the corner from the Rector St. station on the #1 line) -- has a nicely eclectic selection of e-ring settings and wedding bands, for both men and women, & I've found the staff there to be both professional and personable. In my experience, they are helpful but not pushy

Best not to go on weekends, if you can avoid that. If weekends are the only realistic times to visit, avoid this weekend when Single Stone is having a "trunk show" -- unless the prospective couple is interested in a $ingle $tone ring/band:

Don't know if you've seen this thread with pics of pieces from Kataoka, a Japanese jeweler:

His rings are delightful, dainty, delicate -- and he just opened a shop at 176 Franklin Street in Tribeca (his only other shop is in Japan). About a mile's walk from Greenwich St. Jewelers, or you could hop back on the #1 train to/from the Franklin St. station.

Definitely stop at IDJ. I haven’t been since they moved but they are great to work with. There are quite a few in NY that people have purchased from here. You would probably have a great selection to look at there. Many of the jewelers in LA do mostly custom work so they won’t have cases filled with e-rings but will do great work if you know what you want.

I love Joe Escobar if you are willing to go up the coast a bit from LA. They have a fantastic selection and do beautiful work as well. They are closer to San Fran. There are some lovely jewelers there as well.

@HappyNewLife - I am ashamed to say I'm right next to XIV karats LOL. I've gone in there occasionally for everyday jewelry but always skipped their rings section. You're right, they've got a decent selection. Will add to the list, thank you!!

@MollyMalone - thank you for the input! I'd only heard of Single Stone before, and thanks for the trunk show tip. I'll add these to the list. The couple really is in the beginning of their search, so I'm all for passing on eclectic selections! And I am now a fan of Kataoka - I hadn't heard of him or seen his work, but it's SO dainty!

@luv2sparkle - thank you for verifying IDJ, I haven't been there myself but have seen really nice rings. But you're right about LA, and I wasn't sure if it was a similar case where you should know what you want beforehand. So, thanks so much for chiming in =)2

Wow, I really like those Katoaka rings.

OP, I've been to Leon's shop a few times. He usually has a representative sampling of his styles--both rings that are waiting to be picked up and those he's made to sell on his website. If your friends are genuinely potentially interested in using him, they could set up an appointment. I went to Steven Kirsch's once as well; it was a few years ago so I'm not sure what the situation is now but he had a few different rings to show (I think that were waiting to be picked up). They could call and ask. Also agree with Greenwich St. Jewelers. There's also a place called The Clay Pot in Nolita which has more organic kinds of styles.

@nyquestioner - thank you for your input! i didn't know Leon would have samples, his work is amazing and I was a bit scared to ask based on some things I read on here (probably would want to narrow down the style so as to not waste his time!). Same for many of the recommended artists on here, hence my question. Thanks so much :D

It sounds like they prefer a ring they can try on before ordering. I think higher end jewelers such as Greenwich and Joe Escobar are great suggestions because they likely carry sample rings from many designers. Singlestone would be fun to to visit, but their settings are sadly just priced too high. I'd probably skip them just due to not wanting to accidentally fall in love with something! lol! If they do want to go custom plaintum/pave, I'd recommend Victor Canera as my first choice, and Steven Kirsch second. I know Victor keeps a few sample rings on hand.

Exactly this.
I've purchased from Greenwich Jewelers and had them reset a few of my pieces, they're wonderful to work with and have an excellent selection.
Kataoka makes incredibly beautiful jewelry. I need to make it there myself soon.
