Congratulations to all the americans here on the forum - it`s a joy to announce that President Barack Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize 2009 . U.S president wins the prestigious award over 200 nominees , he is the surprise winner of the award , it is a great honour to win the peace prize and I think he deserves it. He won the price for his "extraordinary effort to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people ". I`m proud to be norwegian and I`m proud of the Nobel Peace Price (even though I do not always agree with the Nobelcomittee in their choises , it has been a few controversial recipients , but , that`s another story). I like it but I know there are many who maybe disagree with me , for me he is an inspiration and have the ability to inspire hope for the future . Have a great weekend all of you here at Pricescope

I awoke to the surprise announcement as well. It is indeed an honour. While I have my own opinion on who deserves it and who doesn’t, that’s a whole different thread.

My congratulations on the Obamas.

I''ll add my congratulations to the Obama family.

I don''t agree with it. I am shocked. This is, in my opinion, even more of an insult to the many deserving people than the year it was awarded to Al Gore.

just wanted to say, if this thread gets political, it will probably get removed like previous threads.

Congratulations to President Obama! What an honor for our country, as well.

I am pretty surprised by this too. I am a B.O. supporter, but weren''t the nominations submitted around the time he came into office? Is the award based on the promise he shows or on actual accomplishments? (i am asking b/c i really don''t know much about the details)

He took office just 2 weeks before the nominations closed.

Wikipedia.org has an interesting article and links to a list of all past winners. See also Nobel Peace Prize website for more details.

They said it was based on his inspiring hope and vision at the beginning of his term.

Agreed. Since when is the Nobel Peace Prize given for what accomplishments one MIGHT make rather than what they HAVE made? Absolutely bewildering...but uh, congrats to Obama? lol
I think that he definitely has the potential to earn it in the future, this just feels a bit premature. I''ve noticed that a lot of my social circle (of all political philosophies) feel the same way.

Not supposed to talk politics, so I won''t say everything I''m actually thinking.

All I''ll say is I find it ridiculous, and when my Blackberry woke me up this morning with my CNN breaking news update email about it at 5:15am I actually laughed out loud and thought it was a joke.

I think I probably heard about it this morning when DH was getting ready for work. I vaguely remember thinking "heh...that''s weird" and then falling asleep. I was only half awake. haha.

This New York Times article is pretty interesting. After reading it I can kind of understand why they chose him. Obama said he considers the award a "call to action". Can''t argue that!

I saw this on Yahoo news this morning since I was running late and didn't get to watch my morning news... my first reaction was "this is weird..." and "I didn't even know he was nominated" haahaa.
I read a few stories (including the one Lucky linked) and I can see what the thought pattern was behind his getting this award, however I am not sure if I agree.. still have not had enough time to digest it all.

Regardless of how I feel, I offer my congrats to the Obamas!

I''m happy for him.

I think the committee may have jumped the gun on this one... a wee bit premature, no?

I''m all about Barry, but for realz?

I hope he wears it to debates during his next campaign, hahahahahahaha....

what can I say, the man is a PIMP...

I was somewhat shocked, and I''m basically an Obama supporter. I caught the radio coverage in the middle of the story, and had to convince myself that they were reporting in the past tense, not in the conditional...

I suspect the President himself found it a rather awkward, a d*mn if you do (accept it), d*mn if you don''t situation.

That said, I think his acceptance speech hit the right notes for the situation. He certainly deserved some sort of prize for oratory for that one, and I mean that with all sincerity!

Yeaaaaah. I think Obama''s great and everything, but the Nobel Peace Prize? I''m glad he''s labeling it a "call to action", because honestly...what else can you do?

My inclination is to feel slightly embarrassed for him, because it''s almost as if people are expecting him to solve all these problems, when they need to exhibit some individual responsibility as well. Regardless, congrats to the Obamas, and I''m going to continue hoping for the best!

Wouldn''t that make almost every beauty contestant eligible for the Nobel?

After all, aren''t they all for "World Peace"

This is the message from president Obama himself, on the Nobel Peace Prize:

"This morning, Michelle and I awoke to some surprising and humbling news. At 6 a.m., we received word that I''d been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009.

To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who''ve been honored by this prize -- men and women who''ve inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.

But I also know that throughout history the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it''s also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes.

That is why I''ve said that I will accept this award as a call to action, a call for all nations and all peoples to confront the common challenges of the 21st century. These challenges won''t all be met during my presidency, or even my lifetime. But I know these challenges can be met so long as it''s recognized that they will not be met by one person or one nation alone.

This award -- and the call to action that comes with it -- does not belong simply to me or my administration; it belongs to all people around the world who have fought for justice and for peace. And most of all, it belongs to you, the men and women of America, who have dared to hope and have worked so hard to make our world a little better.

So today we humbly recommit to the important work that we''ve begun together. I''m grateful that you''ve stood with me thus far, and I''m honored to continue our vital work in the years to come.

Thank you,

President Barack Obama"

Thanks for posting that zhuzhu. He sounds sincerely humbled, not like he knows he''s expected to be humbled. It was a very honest response.

Now get out there and make us proud, Obama!
::gives him a little tush slap toward the field::

I also liked the opening lines of his acceptance speech:

"Well, this is not how I expected to wake up this morning," Obama said. He described his interaction with his two daughters.
"After I received the news, Malia walked in and said, 'Daddy, you won the Nobel Peace Prize, and it is Bo's birthday.' And then Sasha added, `Plus, we have a three-day weekend coming up.' So it's -- it's good to have kids to keep things in perspective."

I think the President and many others recognized that the Prize was rewarded more to the movements and causes that surrounded his successful campaign to office, rather than the man himself. You can't really give a Nobel prize to a period in time or a significant historical event, so I kind of think of it as President Obama winning it on its behalf.

Haha, I'm sure he was as surprised as everyone else. If nothing else, that man is a fantastically eloquent orator!

I think he should have said thank you but no. Give to someone who has actually accomplished something more substantial than get elected.

Does this Nobel Peace Prize also award the winner with $1.4 million like the other science Nobel prizes? just wondering.

As a republican who doesn''t mind Obama at all (he amuses me, but I''m not sure that''s necesssary a good reason to like the guy), I think this was a bit strange. I think even democrats were a bit "huh?" on this one.

But he said all the right things. Hey, if they are going to give it to him, might as well be gracious about it.
