Please Help:

Could someone give me some example specs for a 1.5 carrat Princess that has a nice spread and looks very big for the money? I'm just getting so confused and don't know what I'm looking for anymore. Also, is there such thing as a "fish eye" in a princess cut? Lastly anyone have recommendations as to which on-line diamond dealer to go with?

Thanks so much in advance.

That sounds great but how would that work? And if you're not great with Princess cuts then what would you be looking for that would determine if it's great or just good?

Hey cwelu! Welcome to Price Scope! Have you done a search on "princess" on our forums yet? I suggest that you do, so you can learn from everyone else's questions, as they can be varied and really helpful. Also, a princess with a good spread is tough to find, but you also don't want a depth to be TOO big. Look for something under 73%.

Technically, princess stones have flat (low crowns) and big tables, with more depth than most stones. However, it's important to make sure that a princess with a SMALLER table than depth is present, so the stone will have Fire (or life), and not just size.

The larger table of a stone, the bigger the face will be. Only thing is, when you have a table that is TOO large for the depth, you then get a glassy center that reflects light poorly. Light reflection can be seen using an Ideal-Scope or FireScope machine. The Ideal Scope can be purchased through this website, and is $30 or so...? This helps to see where the light leaks.

Shaped stones will NEVER have the same light reflection as an ideal round stone, as they don't have the same circular perfection allowed with a round stone. They WILL leak, BUT some can really sparkle, so it's best to find a vendor you trust and get their opinion on stones if shopping online, but ALWAYS go see some stones in person. Write down every piece of information on their certificate when viewing them (keep a database or journal) and then learn how high or low in color you need to be, and how high or low in clarity you need to be, and see stone with smaller tables and larger tables, and see which you like better...

Good luck and post some stone's information when you start looking... GOOOD LUCK!

I would get all the information I could on the princess diamond I was interested in and post it here for comment.
I would also call the vendor or vendors and have them pull out the diamonds and go over them with me on the phone.

Even with the level of information availalbe from
www.goodoldgold.com
on each diamond Id want to have Jonathon eyeball the
diamond for me as a final check.
Numbers and tests are great but an experenced eye is still better.
If I narrowed the search down to 2 or 3 and there was an appoved independant appraiser in my area id consider having the diamonds sent there and make the final selection by looking at them.

thanks you two...i will follow up with some postings soon!

Nicrez, one word. Jubilee.

Two words: ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!

I stand corrected (and stunned) this may very well be the case, but I have yet to see it, so I can't say for certain...

But for mere mortals, shaped stones find it VERY hard to match round stones...
