"Newbie" to diamonds...searching for engagement ring. Guide?

So, here are the details... I'd really just like to be pointed somewhere to do as much research as I can. I am a major deal shopper in everything, but I know very little about diamonds besides the 4 Cs and their ratings... I've been introduced to table and depth ratios as well...

We went shopping around and she fell in love with this ring at a wholesaler in Dallas (Diamond Broker was the name of the place). I've gotten great word of mouth and recommendations to use them so we did them first.

It's basically a recreation of the Tiffany ring, Novo for the band... and a circle cut as the main piece. The one we looked at was fairly large like 1.87 carats and the diamond was going for $8,000 which seemed really cheap to me for that size. The specs on the 4 Cs were between medium to good on all 4 of them. I didn't get into too many other details (that will be for the 2nd trip, as we primarily wanted to just narrow down to style and shape our first time out)

I'm just wondering what all I need to look into if this is what she wants.

1.) a good sized diamond 1.4-2.0 carats between $10,000 to $15,000 max
2.) circle cut (round cut)
3.) good quality with good sparkle but understanding that these traits may decline with size... we're wanting to find something good in the middle as is everyone I'm sure. I'd say she's primarily focused on size like all girls are, but a good size ring with bad traits will look yellow and not sparkle (we've seen first hand)... so I'd like it to be in the middle of her size range with good specs to fully sparkle and shine and look great when she compares it to her friends and what not :)
4.) Does getting platinum or white gold matter? I can't decide if it's worth the money, so any thoughts on that would be great
5.) Is wholesale jeweler a good way to go? Or is online the best?
6.) Any good walkthroughs or specification check throughs to go through? I feel so naive and dumb and don't want to get hustled :/

I'll gather up the EXACT specs of the 1.87 carat diamond we looked at and see what you guys think. I'll get as many specs as I can beyond the 4 Cs (again, any kind of walkthrough here or a checklist would be great... maybe something I can just bring the place and ask them to fill out everything so I can come back here for further review) I know there's so much more to diamonds then the 4 Cs, table, and depth ratio...

That's it for now. Sorry for the long message. Here is a picture of the Tiffany Novo band (but imagine it with a circle cut diamond unlike the one in the picture)

Also, please be blunt and honest with me... am I naive in thinking I can get a good quality ring 1.4-2.0 carats for my price range of $10-$15,000? Good quality being with great sparkle, not lackluster in comparison to other rings, etc...

Re: "Newbie" to diamonds...searching for engagement ring. Gu

Hi and welcome :) I think online you can generally get better prices, also a lot of the online retailers provide tools like idealscope and ASET images which most B&Ms do not provide. However sometimes B&Ms are competitively priced, I got my diamond at a B&M store after online researching.

I think your budget seems appropriate for what you are looking for for sure :) Your size/budget requirements are a pretty wide range though. Is there a size you are shooting for, or a budget you would prefer to stay around? Also do you know the color/clarity of the diamond you liked? In general G/H VS2/SI1 is a good place to start, you can get a larger diamond if you are OK with lower color like I/J, but that is really a matter of personal preference. Clarity some people just want eye-clean meaning no visible inclusions, so you would be OK with SI1 (check with vendor if eye-clean), others prefer knowing that they have VS or VVS clarity

Perhaps it will be a lot better if I gather the EXACT specs on this diamond we looked at.... and go from there.

I'll email the guy now. He should have them all on hand.

(I have no idea where I placed the sheet of paper with everything on it) ha

Okay, I found the original specs sheet

1.87 carat excellent cut round cut diamond

J color

SI 2

Hmmm not so great huh?.... but $7,900 still seems low even for those specs!

No i don't think that is such a low price, all that diamond has going for it is cut and carat weight, it may not even be eye clean at SI2.

Re: "Newbie" to diamonds...searching for engagement ring. Gu

Yeah, it wasn't eye-clean....

if by eye-clean, that means if I turn it upside down and look at it, I shouldn't be able to see any markings or blemishes.

I specifically remember seeing a dark mak when I turned it upside down.

I'm ruling this stone out...

I'm thinking I need to realistically reduce the size down a bit to 1.3-1.6 range and focus more on a color of H or better and a clarity of VS2 or better
