Hello :wavey:
I hope someone can please help me. I have a hand forged six prong setting that held a 7.6-7.8mm oec diamond or 1.78 carats, however I do not recall the depth of the stone. I have read that sapphires are deeper, hence face up smaller. Is it possible to find a sapphire to fit the setting? The prongs will need to be rebuilt as well. Should I just look at round sapphires around the same mm? What about the depth? Thank you, I appreciate any help.

Welcome to CS! :wavey:

Definitely look for a colored stone based on measurements, rather than carats. While many colored stones are cut deeper than diamonds, they also have different specific gravities, so they all have different carat sizes for the exact same dimensions. And unless you buy a very, very, very deep stone, it should fit in the setting without a problem. =)

Thank you! So depth is not too much of a concern unless overly deep..

From my experience, most of the well cut stones (whether precision or not) tend to fit just fine in a mounting. And if for some reason your stone winds up being really deep, you mentioned that your jeweler has to rebuild the prongs so they could always add a bit of extra metal. So I don't think you have anything to worry about. =)

VirginiaZee, I appreciate your help :wavey:

Anytime. =) Let us know if you want us to keep an eye out for a specific sapphire for you!

I imagine my search will be a difficult one since I have limited shape and size! :errrr:

If you want to start a new thread (recommended since that would let you add a new title... like "Looking for heat only blue sapphire") and give us your requirements (shape, size, color, treatments, budget...) and maybe a photo of the setting (okay, maybe that's just me, I love looking at photos) we can do some shopping for you! :)
