I posted the question on Show me the Bling but someone suggested I may get more replies here :)

Hello all, I am a newbie to Pricecsope and its forums! I found the site because of a recent need to buy a diamond engagement ring.

Unfortunately I had bought one before I learnt from all the useful info posted on here The ring has arrived and I wonder if I should keep or return it. The return period is 30 days. It is from a very reputable and large online store but there is no independent certification. The specs are 3/4 caret, I-J Color, I1-I2 Clarity, 14k White Gold Princess-Cut Solitaire Engagement Ring.

With my camera zooming in, I could see a cloud in the upper left and an inclusion in the upper right which is very obvious in the second close-up photos. To be honest, they are to be expected for an I1-I2 Clarity rating.

I do not have very good eye sight so I could not see any imperfection with my naked eyes. I am quite certain my finance will not either because her sight is worse than mine. The ring was on sale and I only paid $1200 for this 3/4-caret ring. So I wonder if I should keep or return it.

What do you think? Let me know please; I have time to shop for a better ring if it comes to that.

Here is the second close up: the black inclusion in the upper right really showed in this photo although I had not noticed it until then.

Well, several things:

1. It's not particularly a good deal, it's about regular market price. Was the price over, under, or near your budget?
2. I can't tell from the picture if it's a nice diamond, but it's probably average.
3. You will get more sparkle for your buck if you go with a round, and also many more options in your price range, but that only applies if she wants a round.

Thanks, Julie!

1. It was an impulse buy and before I found pricescope and its wealth of info about diamonds. It is under my budget actually. But I have not seen, even for pre-set rings, anything with 3/4 carat to go under $1500.

2. Sorry about my poor photography! I would agree that it is average given its ratings.

3. Round was my initial choice. I just realized round would look quite a bit larger than a princess cut. So I can go down in size with a round diamond AND have a larger diameter stone.

I agree that the price does not seem that good. For example here is a GIA Ex round diamond 0.61 K VS2 for 1270.

here is a princess 0.64 E/I1 GIA for $910

Another poster had success calling ID Jewelry-they were able to work with his budget....here is his thread

ETA you can find more similar price comps on the diamond search...I was just searching a website with images. go to resources at the top and then diamond search

This is remarkably cheap, the only thing I can guess that might be wrong is perhaps the strong blue fluorescence has a milky, hazy effect. Might be worth checking out: http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-search?pt=setform#diamonds_pid=LD02283210

.75 carats will be difficult. Not saying it can't be done, but the effort to track something decent down can be frustrating. Some fancy shapes might get you there. But I think, don't get hung up on the carat weight, more important to go with the cut style that she likes and then buy what you can afford.

Do you like the ring? Ultimately that Is what matters. Personally I would opt for a stone that is smaller, ideal or excellent cut, eyeclean SI1or SI2, color is a preference. I would work with a vendor with a great upgrade policy so in the future you are able to upgrade if you choose to do so without having to practically start all over.

Thank you all for your suggestions!

It was an impulse buy; mostly because I thought it was a good deal from Amazon  I know better now after reading up about diamonds here. I will probably return it and follow what others have explained in their search for a ring. I say another thank you in advance to the help that I no doubl will help from you all on Pricescope.

I may just ask her to try on the ring to confirm I got the right ring size...if she won't take it off afterwards, then I guess I am done!

I would not have her try on a ring and then take it back!! Plus ring sizes can vary slightly from vendor to vendor.
