Hi,

Lurker on this very useful forum and attempting to venture into a diamond purchase. I'm Australian based and find that all the wholesale prices domestically here seem far more expensive than what I see for equivalent certified diamonds online (e.g. what is 4.5-5.5K online seems to be approx 7-7.5K here).

I've read plenty of introductory materials, a range of forum posts on here, and viewed many loose diamonds in person. All of this has been extremely useful for some foundation knowledge but I still consider myself very much a newbie in this area which is why I need some help.

I am hoping to buy a good quality 0.7c to 0.8c round diamond in the white colour bracket with no eye visible inclusions or clarity features. As for whether I land on 0.7 or 0.8 I guess it's more about quality and value for money than a particular size.

Based on what I've seen I was considering one of the following options from either White Flash ACA or James Allen TH collections for better certainty of quality:

1. JA TH 5.1K 0.72c https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-di...-color-vvs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-1144994

Seems a well proportioned cut with good light retention properties. I am slightly worried about the "internal graining and surface graining" in the GIA report, but can't seem to see anything in the magnified image provided to validate my concerns.

2. JA Ex/Ex/Ex 5.5K 0.83c https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-di...-color-vvs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-1100355

Not a TH but has nice symmetry and is well proportioned and a slightly larger size at 0.83c. Has a feather in the GIA report but I can't find it in the magnified image provided.

3. WF ACA 6K 0.827c http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3702292.htm#

Has pinpoints in the report but nothing on the table. Well proportioned with good contrast and light properties at a slightly bigger 0.827c. Does stretch the budget to limits at 6K but thought it warranted including.

4. WF ACA 5.5K 0.876c http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3709381.htm#

All marks on the report are on the outer edges of the diamond and has great dimensions. Larger in size but cheaper than number 3 which I guess is down to it being VS1 rather than VVS1? Seems to have more light leakage than 3 as well.

5. WF ACA 4.9K 0.71c http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3710277.htm#

Has pinpoints on the bottom on the report but nothing on the table. Well proportioned with what appears to be better light retention than 4.

Would much appreciate any advice or feedback from the forum, as while I would like to purchase online and get better value for money I'm also nervous about making a poor decision (the old "too good to be true" chestnut is invading my thoughts).

Thanks in anticipation! :wavey:

Drop to VS2 clarity makemsure stone has "eyeclean" badge and color to G. If spending 5k you had defintely better get over or close to 90 points!

If you and/or lady have cultural requirements for clarity then ignore above. But anything above VS2 and eyeclean is unnecessary.

Thanks for the prompt response and for clarifying number 4s characteristics.

Do you think it's a nice diamond then? Although you've said there is potential to optimise my return further from dropping down VS2 and G, if I tried to source an equivalent to #4 over here I would be looking at about 7.5K USD, so at 5.5K USD with 10% tax I would still seem a lot better off than my domestic options which would be reassuring.

Thanks again.

Number 4 is the easy winner in that line up! Great cut, color, clarity and the largest ! I personally don't see a reason to buy higher than VS1 because that is so very clean. Plus, Whiteflash carries rings very similar to the one you linked, and it is always best to have the diamond vendor set the stone. The first one is more delicate and the second one has a wider shank.

You do not need to guess. And it is unwise to do so unless there is no other option.

No social media but many notes taken during past discussions and consultation made with multiple friends.

Just went ahead and reserved that diamond so just wanted to post on here and say thanks to you both for the assistance and guidance. Much appreciated.

Thanks for those links.

The first one in particular (http://www.danhov.com/solitaire-engagement-rings/danhov-classico-single-shank-engagement-ring-cl117) was pretty similar to what I have designed bar a slightly different weave. It's a very nice ring and setting. I am using a local jeweler for that however as the skills and capability are here in that respect, it's just the loose diamond price that I've observed as being distinctly more expensive in terms of value for money compared to online distributors.
