Hello everyone,

First of all I would like to thank Pricescope’s community for being so helpful and knowledgeable when it comes to guiding newbies like me through the process of finding the perfect engagement ring.

My girlfriend and I have now been dating for almost 3 years and I’m starting to think about proposing to her. I’m still unsure as to when I want to do it but in the meantime I would like to hunt for the ring :-)

I’ve done some research this weekend and here’s what I would like to find:

A 3-stone setting with stones on the band as well. I’d rather like to have the band to be platinum but I guess I would be okay with 18k white gold. I’ve read topics about white gold vs platinum but do you think it’s worth the usual extra grand? Bluenile has very nice white gold one for not too much money: http://www.bluenile.ca/diamond-engagement-ring-setting-white-gold_5846 . Brian gavin also carries a nice platinum one: http://www.briangavindiamonds.com/engagement-rings/three-stone/trellis-with-sidestones-platinum-5558p...

For the center diamond I would like to go as big as possible with the following requirements:

Shape: Round.

Clarity: VS1 or VS2. I pondered whether I should go for an eye-clean SI1 which usually allows me to get an extra 0.10 carat for a given budget. In the end, I’d rather play it safe and not take the risk for her to see imperfections.

Color: I settled for a G. From what I’ve read on PS and on some other websites, only so many people can perceive the yellow (and upon certain conditions). Let me know if you strongly disagree with that.

Cut: Ideal, I want it to sparkle :-)

Fluorescence: None.

Polish and symmetry: Excellent if possible, very good otherwise. Would there be a big difference between the very good and excellent?

Carat: I’d like to go as big as possible while sticking to my budget (see below). I’d be really happy with a 0.80ct.

For the side stones I guess I don’t need to be as picky. 0.30ct on each side with nice enough quality and look would be enough. Do you think 0.30ct would look too small with a 0.80ct center?

My ideal budget is 6K but I could go a bit over (maybe 6500). I live in Canada so I understand that there would also be taxes upon receipt of the ring. My brother-in-law to be lives in the States so I could maybe not have to pay for the Canadian taxes if I go pay him a visit.

I’ve found nice settings and loose diamonds but not from the same vendors. For this reason, I’m starting to wonder if I should get all the pieces separately and get a jeweller to mount it or if I should stick to one given online vendor.

Could you guys give me pointers as to where to hunt for the diamonds and the setting? I’d greatly appreciate.

Thank you in advance!

Jay

Ps: I apologize for all these questions but I really want to do it right :-)
