Hello! I thought I''d introduce myself properly to you all. I''ve been lurking for a few months, but only discovered LIW a few weeks ago. I''ve really enjoyed all the supportive (and fun!) threads that I see here. After having three people, in ONE week, ask, "Are you guys engaged yet?" I decided it might do me some good to officially join a group of gals that share the same frustrations and excitement as I do.
We''ve been dating for about three years now. I moved in with him almost 1-1/2 years ago. We had a very serious talk about marriage this summer, so much so that we were planning for it to happen next summer (we decided to call in pre-engagement), but didn''t tell friends and family. He wanted to be traditional and ask my dad''s permission first, who doesn''t live nearby. I started doing research and getting an idea of a budget, and then it all fell apart. Mostly, I think, because of the money. We''ve talked about rings, but never actually looked at them together. I think he wants to have the money saved up first. So, I started doing some ring research because neither of us knew anything about diamonds. I never thought the day would come that I''d seriously consider marriage. LOL! I stumbled across this site and have learned SO much! When I found this part of the forum I knew I wanted in on the fun, but it''s taken me until now to do it.
The one think I really don''t like about this site is the intimidation factor. I''d love to show this site to him, but I don''t want him to think I want a 2 carat diamond! I will consider myself lucky if I even get more than a .5! It''s just so much money to invest into something that seems a bit frivolous...as much as I''d LOVE something beautiful on my finger...it would be different if it was realistic for us to even be able to save $5000 in a year, but it''s not. We will have a MUCH smaller budget, but that''s okay with me. Besides, when he does officially ask me, I''d like to have something special to give him too (besides just myself!lol). Any of you splurge on a special gift for your FI when you first got engaged? Or plan to (as I know this is LIW)?
