This is my first time posting on Pricescope- grateful there's a site like this! I am new to this process and have read previous posts.

I am getting ready to buy a ring either cushion or round with a halo antique setting. My budget is $4000 for stone/setting. The cut is the most important... and at the end of the day I just want to get a beautiful ring and get a great deal on it. I have gone to the diamond district in NYC but have felt overwhelmed and don't feel I can trust anyone.

Today I saw a gia cushion cut 1.01 ct, grade H, SI1 with 1.50 ct side diamonds for $4,000. Is this a good deal? I will call tmrw to get the GIA # and measurements/depth- as I just found out from the forum this makes a difference.

Does anyone have any recommendations/suggestions? I have heard I can get better deals online... I would greatly appreciate any help in this process as I feel you guys are the experts... Thanks!

With cushions the certificate doesn't really help. Only with rounds. With cushions you'd need really good pictures.

The price you are being quoted is so low I'd suspect that something is wrong.

THere are a lot of cheap poorly cut cushions out there.

The entire purpose of faceting a diamond is to reflect light.
How well or how poorly a diamond does this determines how beautiful it is. And you need a reliable lab report which means GIA or AGS only.
How well a diamond performs is determined by the angles and cutting. This is why we say cut is king.
No other factor: not color, not clarity has as much of an impact on the appearance of a diamond as its cut. An ideal H will out white a poorly cut F.
Now fancies (anything other than a modern round brilliant) are very different than rounds. Then you are talking faceting and light return only-- not numbers on a lab report. And that's much harder. An ASET image can help you with that for fancies: http://www.ideal-scope.com/1.using_ASET_scope.asp As it evaluates light performance by TYPE of light. And the the experienced posters on this board can help teach you about whatever fancy shape it is that you are looking for.
Or, in the case of Princesses and cushions: you can short cut and get an ASG0 cushion or princess. They are RARE though, but we can direct you to vendors that carry them.
With other shapes... you are back to the time consuming method of searching out stones on an individual basis, which means pictures, videos, and ASET images.

What I'd suggest:
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/11724/ This diamond is gorgeous and has great CONFIRMED light return. $2,595

Setting: (GOOD OLD GOLD is a Beverly K setting and they will match this price): http://www.elizabetajewelry.com/products/beverley-k-diamond-engagement-ring-semi-mount-center-stone-not-included-number-864-slash-52

The stone is top quality and will sparkle like a star in the sky. And the setting of a quality that she can wear everyday and now worry about losing stones or problems.

Also, Good Old Gold is in Long Island, NY. And you can take the train there yourself and check everything out in person.

Wow Gypsy thanks for quick reply and helpful info. I really appreciate it.

Are there any ps vendors in the diamond district?

I will def get the GIA number for the stone tmrw.

As a 2nd option he showed me a GIA 1ct round brilliant I color SI1 with 1.5 side diamonds (same setting) for $5000. Once again I will get the Gia number for both of them and see your opinion.

Engagement Rings Direct. ID Jewelry and Old World Diamonds. All are excellent. I highly recommend you make appointments and spend at least an hour with each of them!

They each have slightly different focuses so they would be VERY educational and helpful for you.

Engagement Rings direct has ideal cushions and idealscopes. And wonderful ways of explaining cut and light return to you. So I would go see them first.

IDJ has the best "budget" values and a lot of selection. You will DEFINITELY want to tell him that you are a pricescoper and that you want a pricescope quality ring. He can do miracles with budgets.

And finally Old World Diamonds has GORGEOUS true vintage diamonds and it will be a blast for you to see these. And their settings are just gorgeous as well.

Thanks again! Will def listen to your advice and keep you posted with what I end up with.

Again, I can't tell you anything about the cushion without a picture and an ASET (ideally).

The round is quite frankly terrible though. :wavey:

Oh sorry... This is my first time buying jewelry as you can tell.. I will def go to the places you suggested.

No need to apologize!

You'll be in good hands with any of them! :wavey:
