Help on picking out the best diamond for the budget (something we all want, right?)

Color: I
Cut: Cushion, more square than rectangle
Lab: Prefer GIA
Carat: Minimum 1.5; prefer 1.57 - 1.62

Budget: MUST be under $8k.

I also should add that I think I'd like to buy from James Al

Just something about seeing that diamond spin around lends me to trust it more? Am I crazy?

Is your budget for diamond only or including the setting?

Diamond only! Sry!

That first one is exceptionally pretty... wish it

Was 'I' color... Saw a couple J colors in person today, just don't think I could pull the trigger on that color :(sad

Second one is very nice, is depth % too great?

You need to go by diameter measurements to judge size appearance. Sometimes greater depth can result in a smaller diameter. I need to look for a few minutes to see what I can find.

Does she specifically want a cushion? They just face up smaller than rounds and some people don't realize that.

After looking a bit, I don't think your specs and budget line up very well. I don't see that many well cut cushions on the JA site with the specs you want, and you practically have to be in the SI2 range to get in budget. I'd rather go a little smaller on the diamond and get better clarity than that.

Anyway, these are above budget, but I am posting them so you can use them to compare with other stones because they are better cut than most I am seeing.

This is the nicest one I could find in your range, but it's a J: and has a L/W of 1.08. I just think the faceting is really pretty.

This one is an I and almost square, you'll have to have JA confirm it is eye clean:

The J is lovely. The I has too much leakage under the table.

You must have incredible eyes to be able to tell an I from a J. To most people they would be complete indistinguishable. Even the labs occasionally disagree with each other and themselves, since the difference is so trivial.

Were they GIA J's?
And were they equally well cut?

Because the difference you could easily be performance.

pictures? There are cushions and then there are CUSHIONS! You really need pictures to judge them.
