Hey everyone :)

The time has come in my life to make an honest woman of my beloved, but when it comes to buying a ring, I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing!

I've seen a beautiful (in my eyes at least!) diamond and I know the type of ring and setting that she would love - I just need to know what I should be aiming to pay. I've checked a few different online comparison sites and the results are so varied, and I don't have enough knowledge to know that I'm making a true comparison.

This is the diamond in question: GIA - 2156855295

CUSHION MODIFIED BRILLIANT

Measurements 6.03 x 6.02 x 4.18 mm
Carat Weight 1.30 carat
Color Grade G
Clarity Grade VS1

PROPORTIONS
Depth: 69.4 %
Table: 60 %
Girdle: Slightly Thick to Extremely Thick, Faceted
Culet: None

FINISH
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Very Good

FLUORESCENCE
Fluorescence: None

CLARITY CHARACTERISTICS
Clarity Characteristics: Crystal, Feather, Cloud, Pinpoint, Indented Natural, Natural

Is there anything above that sets off alarm bells (what's the good, the bad and the ugly!) and what kind of price range should I be aiming to pay for the diamond? I have got a quote - but I'm completely unsure if I'm paying over the odds!

I appreciate all your time and I look forward to your valuable feedback.

Kind regards,
Dan.

I would run, not walk away from that diamond. It's 1.3 ct but with a depth of 69% it faces up almost like a .5 ft diamond with a 6 mm diameter. I wouldn't buy it unless he was practically giving it away

Re: Newbie Advise Needed :-) (Engagement ring, first purchas

Thanks Roqsteady! I appreciate the honest and frank response. What are the key things I need to look out for then to get the best quality?

The quotation I got for this ring with 18ct White Gold, thin, full diamond encrusted band was $7,200.

Kind regards,
Dan.

I bet PS experts will give You more advice. Just want to say if You check cushions over all, depth is always near 70% and they always looks smaller than round ones. So depth isn't always the reason to run...

A well cut .5 round diamond faces up around .5ish mm not .6.

Edit - a 69% depth is not unusual in a cushion. I think you are holding on to extra weight in the girdle. Have you seen an
aset of this stone?

Re: Newbie Advise Needed :-) (Engagement ring, first purchas

Just for comparison, here is a 1.3ct cushion from Good Old Gold:
http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/11313/

It has almost the same dimensions as yours - faces up ever so slightly larger but it is a tad more shallow. Just slightly. I agree you may be hiding weight in the girdle - but not a ton.

Can you get an ASET (or even an idealscope) image for it? That will help determine light performance, which is ultimately the most important aspect of buying a well cut diamond.

I'm sorry! I thought it was a round brilliant diamond - forgive my oversight and ignore what I said =X

I wish I could modify/delete my previous post.

It happens :cheeky: ...usually its my 2am post!

Re: Newbie Advise Needed :-) (Engagement ring, first purchas

Thanks for the feedback so far :) Still completely unclear on whether I'm getting ripped off though hehe. I've asked if they can provide me with ASET or Idealscope so let's see what they say. Will keep you in the loop!

Can you link the report? GIA is not giving me anything with those numbers: http://www.gia.edu/search?q=2156855295&=Go

Hi Julie,

I've copied and pasted everything contained within the report beneath the GIA number :)

Thanks,
Dan.

Re: Newbie Advise Needed :-) (Engagement ring, first purchas

Not sure about the price but 69% depth is usual in a cushion. So I guess there's no bad thing about this diamond that would set off alarm bells.

Re: Newbie Advise Needed :-) (Engagement ring, first purchas

69 depth is not unusual in a cushion. There are many facet plots, some need depth, some don't to get performance.
