Thanks to the generosity of jbkhere in parting with her WF setting, my mint garnet can now be set and worn. I apologize for the low quality of the pictures as I've not had time for a proper photoshoot. It is a pain to balance the stone in the setting without having it take a tumble onto the carpet! Any gaps seen are not there because the stone is tilted in the setting. It is a perfect fit with the tiniest of airline, just enough to show off the inner milgrain of the halo.

The setting, to be sure, is a big one with a lot of heft. It is NOT a delicate piece preferred by the young but a statement ring. I feel like a grand dame wearing it. The workmanship isn't as fine as my Mahenge pear setting (finish of the underside, evenness of the little triangles and uneven underbasket) but these are things that are nitpicky and difficult to spot. The ACA diamonds look fabulous and will look better after a good clean up tonight.

The setting pictures were taken on white printer paper which did not turn out well. It looks dark and grayish.

Close up with the mint garnet (not well balanced) in the setting. My poor garnet is terribly smudged from all the handling.

A more realistic handshot. All the pictures are taken indoors under CFL because I am NOT risking dropping the garnet outdoors on a windy day. ;))

Fantastic! I love that stone in that setting - keeps the beautiful mint color from going too sweet. It looks so elegant on your hand too. Congrats!

Wow!! Gorgeous stone and it looks so nice in that setting.

HI:

Great ring for the third finger--love the green.

cheers--Sharon

i have never seen such a yummy garnet before! and the setting looks like it was made for your stone. such karma ...

I love the statement it's making, Chrono. Looking forward to pics when you get it cleaned & all that -- it's just right for that wonderful minty delicious garnet.

oooh!! Very nice pairing, Chrono! that is the perfect pair for that setting - wonderful combination and yes indeed, it is quite the statement piece!

This is the same setting that jbkhere was trying to find an elusive pear for, wasn't it? Looks great on you!!

Chrono - she looks so happy with your garnet!! :appl: It is indeed a statement ring - that was my thought when I first saw it. I'm a touch sad that I won't be wearing it (I'm doing some shopping to help me get over it :)) but am thrilled that the setting has finally found a perfect stone!! It really looks beautiful!

Many thanks to Rosebloom, TL (who comes and goes from lurkdom these days), Canuk-gal, slksapphire, JewelFreak, Enerchi but most of all, to jbkhere. It is definitely some sort of karma thing going on even though I don't believe in luck and such things.

jbkhere,
You've got your gorgeous 3 stone tanzanite ring to keep you busy for a while.

Enerchi,
Yes, this is one and same split shank halo Whiteflash platinum setting with ACA melees that she was looking for a pear stone for.

I completely believe in Karma AND serendipity. And am always so excited when I get to see them firsthand :D

It was defintely meant to be! It looks gorgeous in the setting Chrono. Will there be an airline or will it be snug, it's difficult to tell from the photo?

You will be hard pressed to see the airline unless you take the time to really look at it, but it is there.

Well, I'm glad that setting finally found a mate, if not with one nice PSer, then another! I can stop looking now. At least for that! I must only know the washed-out variety, if that's a mint - it looks like a tsav to me! Beautiful combo!

That's a beautiful mint garnet. Lots of blue, and the halo sets it off perfectly.

WOW that's such a result considering it wasn't bespoke for your pear. Pears are such different shapes that finding an exact match can be problematic so this is wonderful. I can't wait to see it when it's set!

Well done!! Looks great. Glad to see that you get to wear it and show it off. Nice combination!!!

Where do I begin? This one means so much! First of all, its beautiful. The stone looks extraordinarily great in that setting. JBK, your thoughtfulness and willing to part with something you love is a lesson for all of us! I really hope that karma rewards you triplefold. Chrono, I can't wait until your proper photoshoot, but must say that I think these photos are quite good, and your bright lighting (fluorescent?) really works.

So now on with my questions as to when does mint stop and tsav start. In these photos, I would say that this is a lighter toned tsavorite rather than a mint. Are these photos accurate for color? I guess it doesn't matter what it is - I'm just still trying to figure out whats what, I guess.

But the ring/stone is a great match! Oh serendipity, how we love you (and JBK)!

Ohhhhh so much yummy GREEEEEEN!!!!!

I like the setting too!!

Beautiful garnet and setting. I think it is a perfect match.

It's lovely, Chrono!

right... a gorgeous stone. truly neon stoplight green! you were SO smart not to even consider a recut. this stone had everything a gorgeous garnet should have. The saturation, the bluish secondary, the unbelievable sparkle. Gorgeous stone, and a lovely setting. Congratulations!

NKOTB, Pregcurious, Greg, Minou, Jereni, LisaRN, Laila and Arkteia,
Thank you for taking the time to comment on my new acquisition.

I gave the setting a good cleaning but not a deep down cleaning. Soaked it and brushed it twice over. The diamonds are finally showing some fireworks but I think a steaming session will take the rest of the gunk out. I think the previous owner (not jbk) did not clean her ring as religiously as most of us PSers do, as the diamonds do not sparkle as crazily as my other ACA melees. I was all set to take new pictures until I realized I left the garnet at home. :(sad So sorry but it'll have to happen the week after.

This is a good time as any to address the issue of tsavorite vs mint. In reality, both are green gossular garnets. I suppose for marketing purposes (as it relates to pricing), the darker greens are called tsavorites. It is likely that anything medium and darker in tone will be a tsavorite. I do not know for sure where the cut-off point is officially. Not too long ago, I had never heard of the word "mint" garnet. Again, it is a marketing too to help the lighter green garnets sell better. There has been discussion as to whether only lighter green garnets with a blue modifier can be called a mint garnet but these days, anything light green whether with a blue or yellow modifier is called a mint garnet. I am very sure that in certain countries and certain vendors will gladly label my green gossular garnet a tsavorite. Tone wise, it is a medium light.

Thanks, Chrono! And frankly, I don't really care because I love them all! Its just that if you pulled together all the threads on here and analyzed what folks call tsav vs. what they call Merelani mint, you'll see there is a big overlap. Like I said, I don't care - I love them all

One more thing, Chronobruh, when does it go to your jeweler? Would you please come back and share photos? Thank you muchly!

Probably next month. February is a busy time for me. I know that if I don't post pictures of the completed ring, I'll have several others hounding me offline until I do.
