Hello everyone,

I have been trying to learn as much as possible about diamonds for the last 3 months, the deeper I get into diamonds the more I realize that I need to know! But I am running out of time now.

I am sure many of you know infinitly more than I do, or will ever know so here goes!

My girl friend wants a really nice diamond engagement ring just over 1ct full of brilliance and fire she has a very good eye and can pick the best diamond out of many stones at will.

I have narrowed my search down to 2 stones and would like your opinion of which to get. They are both the same exact price 5,500 out the door, and are set in platinum.

#1 RB, 1.11ct.clarity grade vvs2, proportions ideal, depth 60.7% table 55.5%, crown height 15.5%, pavillion depth 43%, culet none, girdle thin, polish ex,symmetry ex, color I, fluorescence faint. This stone rates a 1.5 on your cut tester and is in the box near the top in slight orange shade. This stone looks great in my opinion.

#2 RB 1.05ct. clarity vs2,porportions ideal,depth 60.7%,
table 56%,crown height 14.5%, pavillion depth 43%,culet none, girdle medium, polish ex,symmetry ex,color G,fluorescence none. this stone rates a .7 on your cut tester but is not in the box but just slightly to the left and almost dead center of the red zone. This stone lookes even better than stone one seemes to, has a touch more fire but I could be imagining it!

oh both stones are hearts and arrows and are graded by IGI
Which would you pick and am I getting a fair value for my money? these stones are both extremely beautiful and stand out among other lesser diamonds

Thank you very much for your opinions!
I hope I have done my homework but if they are both not recomended I will start searching again!

First, I would stay away from the idea of a set price out the door with a platinum mounting. And second, IGI certed stones, in my opinion, I would stay away from.

Whiteflash, goodoldgold are a nice place to start for looking for the right stone. And I would check GIA (H&A) certed stones.

You'll get much more accurate results from the HCA if you use angles. The second diamond probably has a better angles combo than the first. Based on the crown height, the first diamond seems to have a touch of steep/deep going on there.

$5500 for a 1.05 carat, G, VS2, TRUE H&A diamond Certed by AGS or GIA is low. Not counting the plat set. I would suggest you get Sarin info on both diamonds before plunking down the dinero. At the very least, make purchase contingent on a satisfactory appraisal and have the loose diamond evaluated prior to being set.

I would also consider going lower in clarity... you could save some $$$ or get "more bang for your buck" in another way if you are willing to drop down below the VVS2, or even the VS2.

One stone is "I" color, one is "G". Do you feel that you (or your GF) can tell the difference? If not, then no need to buy a higher color, either.

Do you have the dimensions of each stone?

They sound like (IMHO) they each are real beauties. For much more "technical" info, you really need crown and pavilion numbers. But the bottom line is, it sounds like you have looked at lots of diamonds, and you have seen these ones in person. Have you observed them both in lots of lighting situations? That (along with an independent appraiser's opinion, of course!) could be all the more that you need to know!

If the second one looks better, it might be a better bet, since it seems to look better from this side of the screen.

Since IGI is considered to be more lenient, you might well be getting an H or I stone (which should look just fine in that sort of a cut and size). You don't really need to be up there on the clarity either, unless one of you is an eagle-eyes.

thank you to all who replied.

I neglected to give dimensions of the stones, but stone # 1 is no longer avalible sold!
That is ok because I was leaning to stone #2 any way!

The dimensions are 6.58-6.60 x 4.00
also if It makes a difference the stone is laser inscribed with serial number on girdle.
Can't crown angles ect, be determined mathmaticaly?

This stone looks awesome is all I can say!
Is not a beautiful diamond a beautiful dimond regardless
of who certified it?

I brought it to a jeweler who was courious about seeing it. He was nice enough to compair it to stones that he has, as for the g color it seems to be! it matches up nicely to a 1.15 ct g vvs2 gia stone he has for 8,800 also ideal cut! he said the stone has to be taken out of the setting to match more accuratly. He said for the money I paid he could not get anywear near it even without the platinum setting. When I told him where I bought it he was surprised ! Sam's club!!!! 5,100 plus tax 5500 total.

I guess that I will send it out to be graded but the problem is removing it from the setting! I will say that I am very happy with this diamond and if it were to somehow be certified lower I still think it compairs with the best I have seen for cut brilliance and fire and as far as inclusions they are very hard to find with a 10 x loupe and impossible with the naked eye.
My .50 ct diamond j color pales in comparison and lookes yellow next to this stone.

I am very happy with my selection and am sure we will keep it. And that my wife to be, will love it also!

Yesterday I went and purchased it because I do not want to loose it! I have 90 days to return it no questions asked and if found not to meet certs can return anytime.

Do you have the cert #? If it begins with F, then 2 or 3, then another letter + 5 numbers (Eg F3G00000), then it's an IGI Antwerp report. They are widely used here in Europe. At times they are a little less strict than HRD on color, but I surely wouldn't reject a stone because it was IGI Antwerp graded. /idealbb/images/smilies/9.gif

I do not have the number with me it is at home but the other stone #1 was IGI 3034795U I think mine ends in a U also, Is that bad?
