New (bargain) E-ring and want to change centre stone.. Help!

Hi there, newbie posting so apologies for any hiccups.

Yesterday, SO and I went to get me sized properly ( ) so we could start the process of finding a ring, and low and behold this sparkly beauty was discounted a ridiculous amount, and we went home with it!

It needs to be resized, but I also am thinking of upgrading the stone with a lighter sapphire, and maybe going slightly bigger. The current stone is 5.5mm brilliant cut, and I was wanting to go to either a 6.5mm brilliant or a 7x5 oval sapphire. It's a 950 platinum setting.

Any thoughts? I have no idea if this is reasonable, and I hate going into jewellers not knowing the proper terminology - I have yet to find a jeweller I feel comfortable with

I'm pretty sure you cant put an oval in that setting without major costly re-work (if at all).

I'm not even sure if that basket will take a 6.5mm stone. The stone in it is already set pretty low.
Maybe you could find a really good jeweler who could add to the prongs but I would be hesitant
to have it done.

You could certainly replace the stone with a lighter stone of the same size. You should post
in the colored stone forum for help.
