Today I spent looking for engagement setting ring. I read this forum and saw rings i really like. But i wanted to see setting in real, not only on pictures. I’been at four stores and didn’t find anything even close to what i want. Finally i stopped at Jared and OMG it’s exactly what i’ve been looking Neil Lane setting. But what was my disappointment when i found out that setting is selling with wedding ring. I don’t need wedding ring and i don’t like that one in the set.

When I came home I researched on line about this ring setting. I found not good review, that diamonds was fell all the time. Was it because of setting made from 14K white gold or just poor quality???

Is anyone had a bad experience with Neil Lane ring?

I read on this forum that many people ordered setting from jewelers which recommended here , one of them Mark T Premium

I love this one:

http://www.engagementringsdirect.com/emily-micro-pave-halo-engagement-ring-bpid-237-19.html

But I need see setting before i buy it. That’s why I went at the stores.

So i have a dilemma: buy in the store (Neil Lane setting) knowing that i might have fallen diamonds, but it has lifetime warranty or ordered on line from recommended jewelers not seeing it in real???

Where do you live (so we can recommend a trusted jeweler near you)? The quality of the ERD ring is almost certainly going to be several times better.

There is a thread going on right now about halos if you want to check it out. There are VAST differences in quality of halo/pave settings. VAST. Handforged is going to be best and you'll be looking at $4000-6000: Victor Canera, Steven Kirsch, Leon Mege, and then Maytal Hannah. Then there are cast settings. Here's one from WhiteFlash: http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/diamond-settings/amphora-diamond-engagement-ring-1039.htm

If I were not going for the best quality handforged, I'd probably just go with the WF ring over the Neil Lane. Neil Lane is a big name in jewelry, but he sold out lending his name to low cost, low quality rings, in my opinion.

ERD is certainly above the Neil Lane ring and above the cast WF setting but having only seen his rings here (and not in person), I'd probably put them in the tier with Maytal Hannah and not Victor. All I can say is don't overpay for a cast ring! The one from WhiteFlash is priced right in comparison to the handforged pieces.

There are tons of informative posts on this forum about halo settings. I'd really recommend you read for awhile before making a decision. You can save money by learning from the experiences of others.

I certainly wouldn't spend that kind of money on a ring with poor reviews. If that pricerange is in your budget you can find a very nice, well made. WF and Engagement rings Direct are both reputable and make a nice product and go with either of them over the Neil lane. I'd also suggest checking out Goodoldgold and Pearlmans for a look at some designer settings. Beverley K comes to mind and I know Pearlmans will send you a setting to look at in person if you don't have a retailer in your area.

Not exactly the same as the Neil Lane but Michael Beaudry is a high end designer and some of his rings are in closeout, this one being a great price and the pave quality excellent:

Pave settings like this will always come with the risk of losing stones. It's just inherent to this type of setting. It's a bigger risk with lower-quality pieces, certainly, but a halo with pave stones is going to have to be treated carefully, and is probably not going to be a lifelong setting that is maintenance free. That said, it's a popular look, and if you go into it understanding what the issues can be, you should be fine.

If you're looking for similar settings, it's called a "halo" setting. They are hugely popular right now, and nearly all vendors have some version of them for you to consider. They can get extremely pricey pretty fast, however. The masters at working with pave are going to come with a very hefty price tag. You can get a similar look for less, but expect that you will probably have to maintain it, and may have loss of stones.

As far as not wanting to buy something without seeing it in person, this is the thing about internet shopping - you can get better prices, but don't have the option to see in person. Some thoughts:

The vendor may be willing to make a video for you to give you a better idea.

I don't know if you have purchased the diamond yet, but if you're looking at this kind of setting, IMO it's worth considering traveling to see the setting and/or diamond in person. Whiteflash, for example, has a physical space and you can visit and see the diamonds and rings in person. The cost of airfare to Houston isn't huge compared to what you're looking at spending on the ring. If you must see it in person to have peace of mind, consider it.

Look for online vendors who are selling "brand name" settings. Whiteflash has a Vatche setting that you might like: http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/diamond-settings/grace-diamond-engagement-ring-by-vatche-256.htm You can probably find a jeweler near you with a similar setting to see it in person, but may be able to get a better price on the setting from WF (you will almost certainly get a better-priced, higher quality diamond from WF than from your local jeweler).

Here's another WF setting to consider: http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/diamond-settings/park-avenue-diamond-engagement-ring-1669.htm

This is a similar, less expensive setting: http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/diamond-settings/halo-prong-diamond-engagement-ring-521.htm

Good Old Gold sells online but has a physical presence in New York. Here are some of their settings: http://www.goodoldgold.com/SettingsGallery/ Here's a video they made of one of their halo settings: http://www.youtube.com/user/DiamondInfoMan#p/search/3/76VVlRYUBAw

These are all pretty halo settings: http://jewelsbyericagrace.smugmug.com/JbEGSignatureSettingsandSpecia/Halos

I lived in Tampa years ago and there was a wonderful jeweler in the international mall. Can't remember the name sorry! His work was beautiful! He might be able to make you something locally.

This isn't correct. There are internet jewelers who will send out settings and/or diamonds to an appraiser local to you or directly to you for viewing, usually on memo but it can be done.

Thank you for mention Vatche setting. I was fell in love with this one. But I would like larger diamonds on the setting. I've been looking this setting to see in real and couldnot find it. Also i've been in NYC and visit Diamond raw , nobody of them had Vatche.

Is Vatche cast setting? Is it a good quality?

I've visit one jewelry store "international diamonds" in Tampa and they had samples of Ritani and other designers (they didn't have Vatche), and i didn't like any of them.

QUESTION: Does metal (14K gold, 18K gold, Platin) effect quality of setting and loosing diamonds?

ID Jewelry on 47th St. carries Vatche. Vatche is excellent quality. I am not sure about cast vs. handmade. All I know regarding the metal is that the top quality designers use platinum to make their halos most of the time.
