Hi Pricescope,

I've been reading through the forums and learned alot, this site is great! Unfortunately I'm still undecided, and I need to decide today in order to get everything made in time. Here's my options for diamonds:

Kay Jewelers
"Tolkowsky" Ideal cut diamond, IGI graded
6.01 - .604 x 3.66 mm, .8 ct, G color, SI2, Excellent polish, Excellent symmetry

R F Moellers (a local Minnesota store)
Lazare ideal cut diamond, AGS graded
.73 ct, J color, SI1 (don't know the measurements, unfortunately, or the cut grading, but I'm told Lazares' have standard tighter than AGS requirements for polish and symmetry)

I know she wants a white gold simple solitare, with filigree, but no hand engraving or miligrain. At R F Moellers I'd be getting a varna ring that fits what I want prefectly but is a bit more expensive. At Kay they'd modify a ring to replace a six-prong head with a 4 prong platinum head and remove some miligrain from around a channel of side diamonds. I'm worried though about the how these modifications will turn out, specifically if the will the head be secure and if the miligrain can be filled in well to give it a smooth look with the rest of the band. Should I be worried about this? How do the diamonds compare? Also the Varna has a basket setting, will this take away from the brillance of the diamond?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Forgot to mention, the Lazare is a bit cheaper, so in total the rings come out about the same at just over $5000.

Thanks!

Not enough information. Can you post copies of the certs at least?

yeah, can you post copies of the certs or the report numbers?

I'd lean toward the Lazare if only for the clarity. An AGS-graded SI1 is likely to be a "true" SI1 and possibly eye-clean. An IGI-graded SI2 could be a true I1-I2 as IGI is one of the most lenient grading labs out there. Much less likely to be eye-clean. Also, the G color on the IGI grading may be as low as I-J if GIA/AGS were to grade the same stone. So considering that we know nothing about cut, but color is probably similar, and clarity is better on the Lazare, that's what I'd get. They also have the setting you want, which is a plus.

If these are your two choices, I recommend the Lazare also. IGI SI2 just screams "inclusions" to me.

HI Win:

Welcome! If you have time, please do a search using the above search engine to put the spec's of the diamonds you've found and see what kind of price comprisons you find. There are quite a few..... perhaps not the Lazare Brand, but others that "might" compare. Also, you have mentioned the setting you desire is a classic and simple style--there also can be price comparsions easily found if you search a little.

My point is, the $5000 quotes/price tag, seems quite high for what you've been offered. Can we help more, or have you already prucashed your ring?

cheers--Sharon

I'd second what Canuk said. For $5k, I think you may be able to get more for your money....if you have decided for sure to go with one of those two stones, I'd definitely go with the AGS graded stone....
