I am on a quest to help my father get my mother an anniversary present (40 years this August).

She usually does not wear a ring because they are uncomfortable to her. We definitely want platinum in case the problem is an allergy to gold. I think the number one concern is that it have a thin band -- she tried on my 3mm wedding band and felt it was too thick and would therefore be uncomfortable. She tried on my Vatche x prong e-ring and thought it was confortable, although I think it was made thinner than 2.5mm in the resizing process.

She saw a friend''s diamond eternity band recently and was quite impressed. However, my mother rarely spends money on herself and my father is worried that if he spends too much, she''ll feel that it was a waste. She also is not very flashy, although I know she notices the jewelry that other women wear.

So I was thinking of the Vatche 5 stone truffle. And my dad may still go for this, but I could tell that he was worried that the $3k or so pricetag for 0.75ctw or 1.00ctw would be spending too much in my mom''s eyes. I''m worried that 2.5mm is too close to 3mm to be comfortable for my Mom, but I also think that because it doesn''t have flat edges like my band it might be ok. I''m looking into the 0.50ctw in case the price would make my Dad feel better.

I also suggested this 2mm 5 stone 1/3ctw from BlueNile, although I''m worried that it will be too small to stand alone. What do you think? My dad asked if we could "upgrade" the diamonds, which I guess meant in size, but every other 5 stone ring on BlueNile is thicker. This one also has a slight curve, and I''m worried that would look weird.

So does anyone have any other suggestions?

Our requirements are:
*thin and comfortable band, no wider than 2.5mm
*diamonds only on top of ring, not down sides or all the way around
*platinum
*1/3 to 1ctw
*$3k or preferably less

Do you guys think the Vatche 5 stone truffle is the best bet? My dad seemed just on the verge of being convinced to get it, but I was worried that maybe I was just pushing him to get her what I''d want. If there is an option somewhere in between the Vatche and the BlueNile options, that might be a good compromise.

Thanks for your help!

I''d consider something WF has to offer. Lovely, lovey melee without breaking the bank.

Facets Collection has some beautiful, dainty bands. Even though you indicate you don''t want diamonds to go all the way around, this would likely be very comfortable because it is so tiny.

My favorite would be this very petite, micro pave band from Leon Mege. He can make it in platinum, rose gold, yellow gold. A very lovely band!!! These are very affordable as well!

My vote would be for the Vatche truffle ring in one carat total weight. That is a gorgeous and classic ring and I''ll bet your mom would get used to the size and the cost after she receives that beauty! The five stone ring from Whiteflash isn''t bad either, but to me the others just look too thin to stand out when worn alone.

I have a 7 stone shared prong band in PT from SP. Each stone is about 0.07ct (under 2.5mm band thickness) and the diamonds cover just the top part of my fingers, sits very low and is large enough to wear alone on the finger.

i think the facets channel set would be comfortable for her. i think they have a pretty good selection of eternity rings and good value for the money. i know it does not meet the requirements you have set forth but i own a few of their eternities and they are very comfortable.

OK, my dad is all but sold on the Vatche five stone, 0.50ctw or 0.75ctw.

I''m worried that in normal circumstances, 10 pointers would look miniscule. But my mother isn''t flashy.

So we''re leaning toward the 0.75ctw.

Does anyone have pics of five stones bands in either 0.50ctw or 0.75ctw? The web graphics never help me.

phoenixgirl, I think diamondseekers band is .75 ctw but it''s a 7 stone.

here''s a pic, I couldn''t find one of just her band but you can get the idea at least

I have a channel set eternity band with 6 pointers, and I''m thinking that 10 pointers would be large for someone who wants a small ring.

I''m a little biased, but I think my band is lovely and a great value for the budget. It is also quite comfortable.

I would suggest getting a similar ring, but with smaller stones to keep the width down (mine are .31''s). You could get a 7 stone with 20 pointers and that would be really pretty and I think it would be in budget, but only WF could say for sure.

Well, the ring was almost ordered, and then . . .

My mom was wearing a really cute outfit, so I took off my pendant and told her it would look nice with it. She really seemed to be enjoying wearing it, and I liked being able to see it for a change.

When my dad wasn't around, she told me that she's worried he's trying to buy her a ring (come on Dad, be a little sneaky!) but that she's afraid she wouldn't be able to wear it and then would feel bad about the expense. She said, "I'd like something like this!" So I'm going to get her the same pendant as mine but in platinum with a bigger diamond and better color and clarity. My budget is around $3k and dad's already given me a check. Should be fun!

I bet getting the pendant will make her much happier! With that budget, you could get a nice pendant and earrings to match!

A beautiful pendant like yours will be a wonderful anniversary gift and now you won''t have to worry that your dad is getting her something that she might not end up wearing!

phew, good thing you guys found out first before giving her the ring! It sounds like she is going to be thrilled with a pendant. Who wouldn''t be?!

OK, I ordered my Mom this diamond (scores a 0.9 on the HCA, only VG is for spread which is strange since it has a 60.6 depth and thin to medium girdle . . . to me that is a good spread!) and this pendant. I had my eye on this diamond last week and told my dad about it, but he delayed in getting back to me and the website said it wasn''t available anymore. Then today he told me to make him a recommendation and I found "the one" available again, so we took that as a sign and ordered. Now my only concern is that my mom will think the diamond is too big.

But hey, it only breaks down to 0.02 carats per year of marriage, so that definitely isn''t obscene. I''m already at 0.64 carats per year of marriage not counting my e-ring.

ooooh, great choice! She is going to love it. Maybe it will be big in the beginning, but she will surely get used to the size soon enough

It looks beautiful! I bet she''s going to thrilled! She''ll just have to get used to being a little blingier!
