Hi guys, first a huge thank you because I am around sooo much and have learnt alot from everyone here.

Thanks to the help here I now have a much nicer ring due to a recent reset. But my project is still going because I fell in LOVE with the idea of getting an eternity band. This new project has been consuming my mind with researching the different styles, shapes sizes and of course what will & wont work with my ring. (eg I have a feeling that a larger eternity band will eat into my new reset).

Anyway.....to the point.....what do you guys think of this????? A jeweller that I was going to buy from had a beautiful etenity band with very lovely white sparkley diamonds around 6 pointers each. Everything was perfect even the finger size, except the actual profile of the band was very very high, which resulted in the band looking way too big both height wise and width wise.

Well, instead of making me an eternity band from scratch, this jeweller wanted to (1) file out the excess height or bulk of metal from the inside and then (2) cut out a segment from the ring and then close the gap thus making the circle smaller to fit my finger.

It is a four prong diamond setting, but I opted to not have a ring that was so tampered with. The jeweller thinks it is a perfectly good solution & wants to use the ring he has in stock.

Am I right for thinking this is a crazy idea????

yes it is a majorly bad idea to do a Frankenstein eternity band.

Sounds like a convenient thing for the jeweler to do with a ring nobody else wants. Get yours in your exact ring size. With 6pt stones it''s not going to be cheap, so why skimp on the setting.

definitely not a good idea at all.

option 1 - have speed humps added - they can make a fair amount of size difference

option 2 - the band gets bent -but not the head with the diamonds in it - so the ring is slightly oval

option 3 - post a picture of the ring - it may be that the settings are seperated enough that they will not flex under the stones and it will be perfectly safe to resize smaller (I have decades of experiance doing this stuff)

Thanks for the replies everyone!

And Garry, thank you for giving me your professional opinion.

Im guessing that it would be safe if this jeweller is proposing it.....but I still dont like the idea as it makes me worry about how it will look. eg diamonds might be spaced differently or move etc. Some precision may be lost in the process.

BTW, the jeweller washed his hands of me after I didnt like the idea and told me I was too indecisive.

Have a great Christmes and a safe & Happy New Year everyone!!!!!!!
