Hello folks,
I am hoping someone can talk me through some problems I am having with a ring being resized -

The ring in question is a 4mm scatter set band in white gold with diamonds all the way around (pic below). The ring was made 6 years ago as a size 5 3/4 (K and a half UK), I recently took it into a local jeweller to have it resized to a 6 1/2 (M). He said that this was doable but some of the stones at the bottom of the band may need to be reset.

It has come back resized to a 7 (N) which is far too big. The problem now is that he will not resize the ring back down because he thinks it will put too much strain on the ring but wants to put sizing bumps inside instead. I do not want to overreact and have said I will have a think about the next step because the jeweller does seem very keen to put this right, however I do not have a great feeling about this. Can someone talk me through the reason not to resize the ring and the alternatives?

I can't address structural integrity or anything, but there's a big difference between a 6 and a 7. Those are going to be pretty large sizing beads! Is there any place you can get a second opinion? Sorry that you're having to deal with this. What a pain!

He’s right, it’s a pain.

I disagree that it’s not possible or even that knobs are the best solution. ½ size is a 1.25mm piece. That's just a tad over the thickness of a saw cut. In your picture there isn’t a space that big but maybe there is somewhere else in the ring. That means taking out a stone (which may damage the stone), redrilling and resetting it. Changing the curvature of the ring changes slightly the seating on every single stone. Depending on how it was done in the first place, this can mean tightening a bunch, resetting some, or nothing at all. He can’t tell till he gets into it and this affects the ongoing issue of who is to warranty the piece if something happens later. At 6 years you're probably out of warranty anyway but did the same jeweler make it?

If it was my ring, I would do it right, not with the knobs. If he’s responsible for the mis-sizing, he should pay, if not you should but I would do it right either way.

Does it fit super loose? It seems like a very wide ring and I go up in size with super wide rings. I'm guessing you're NOT comfortable with how it fits though, since you're asking.

Thank you very much for the advice, I am going in this afternoon to discuss this. He sized my finger himself but the sizer he used was 5mm in width and there was no curve on the inside of band - I do expect to go up a bit in size to accomodate a wide band but he has suggested that part of the problem is him not taking into account the curve on the inside of the ring. It is big enough that when I shake my dry hand back and forth once it comes straight off.

The ring was made by another jeweller in a different part of the country, I am going to request that he does it properly rather than use sizing beads. Hopefully this can be resolved without any bad feeling on either side.
