hello everyone! im new to the forums, i decided to join because i''m planning on buying an engagement ring for my girlfriend and i need some advice!

i went to my local Kay Jewelers today and i saw this diamond solitaire,
It is a round cut 1/3 CT.
An F color rating and an I rating for clarity.
The polish/symmetry is GOOD/GOOD.
The ring setting is a 4-prong 14k white gold.
The diamond is IGI certified.

The price tag said $799.99 but i negotiated it down to $599.99. I took this into comparison with one of the non-certified diamond solitaires that they had which was also 1/3 CT. and 14k white gold setting. Except the color rating was a J and the clarity was I2, the price for the non-certified ring was $549.99.

I wanted to get your opinions on whether this is a good deal or not since theres only a $50 difference between the certified and non-certified ring. Thanks in advance for the help!

I''m sorry, but that is too much to pay for I clarity stones.

Hi Baloney,

Congrats on taking this big step in your life!

I know you can do a lot better than the ring you''ve found at Kay as far as quality and price. Take a look around this website, search the forum, and read the tutorials. You''ll begin to learn more about diamonds and what you should look for. Stores like Kay are never going to give you a good deal.

I''m going to look for a few stones for you and post them here in a moment.

$300 for the stone and $100 for the equivalent very light setting is internet pricing.

Here are a couple of AGS certified Ideal cuts from Whiteflash that would put both of those diamonds to shame, at roughly the same price.

And please look at the trade-up policy. You won''t see anything like that from a mall store:

I have yet to see a nice stone from Kay''s in that price range. I think you would be much better off buying one of the diamonds listed above.

ditto
it would be nicer than staying at the same quality level but cheaper.

thanks for all the replies everyone!

i thought about buying it online, but im worried that the ring/diamond wont be as i expect since i dont get to see it before i buy.

how many of you guys bought your diamond rings online? what where your experiences? thanks!

I have bought 3 diamonds online, 2 from GoodOldGold and 1 from Wink Jones. The experiences were all great.

Many of us here have purchased online. Trust me, I was nervous as heck to wire $10k + to a vendor to purchase a diamond, sight unseen. If you stick with the recommended PS vendors, you will not be disappointed!!!

I bought online from the other side of the world and the diamond and ring surpassed my expectations in many ways :).

I went through Sarah at GOG, she is fantastic :).

1 stone from Whiteflash, 1 stone from Winfield''s. They exceeded my expectations.
