Just put down a deposit on a diamond but want to double check and make sure I am getting a good deal. I am still kind of a newbie and a little nervous about what I just did. Need a 2nd opinion on whether to purchase this or get my deposit back ASAP. He needs a response by Friday. It is a GIA diamond with following specs:
Round brilliant
1.71 carats
depth=59.4%
table=60%
girdle=thin to medium, faceted
culet=none
polish=VG
symmetry=excellent
clarity=VS2
color=E
florescence=slight

Sarin
diam=7.83mm
depth=59.5%
crown=33.8 1.05mm 13.4%
pavil = 41.2 3.41mm 43.6%
table 4.68mm 59.8%
culet= 0.5%
girdle = 1.0% .8% thin 1.5% medium
According to sarin, it got a score of 0 on everything but table where it scored a 2.

It has two slight clouds on the edge and a slight need in center. Anyway, the diamond looks beautiful and very sparkly and couldn''t get anyone to beat the price of $15K. Just want some reassurance. Also, does anyone know a good appraiser in downtown boston? Thanks for the help.

Hi Shaft,

Base on the Sarin report, this diamond is a 1B cut class in the AGA chart. The average price per carat (from price stat. in the top toolbar) for your size of diamond is $9,061. $15K is the average price. I am a newbie here, that is all I can help. Because your diamond has some inclusions therefore I let the buying or not advice for the experts in here.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, it is just hard to know if getting ripped off or not. I guess the best thing to do is just get it appraised.

There was a good thread just the other day - regarding angles and proportions. With many in agreement that with a crown angle of 35° the max pavilion angle should be 41° and that for every degree reduction in crown angle, the max pavilion is increased by 0.2°.

" What does this mean for me" i hear you ask. Well you have a Crown Angle of 33.8° - this corresponds to a Max Pav angle of 41.24° of which according to the Sarin info you posted, you are within this - altho remember that that angle is an average mark - and that the angles accutally recorded could be 41.1-41.3 which would be bad - but on the other hand - could be quite tight say 41.18-41.22 - and the only way off telling is to look at the Sarin, and see if it gives the range it measured.

The Cut advisor gave it a score of 3.3 - Worth buying if the price is right. other points, The Table is maybe a little on the large size - but on hte other hand it also has an excellent spread. Really at the end of the day, if you think its sparkley then maybe you should keep with it. Price wise - seems about average doing a search above.

Lord Summerisle summed up what we non-experts can tell from the numbers.

This sounds like a stone that you should look at carefully, away from the bright jewelers lights. See if it looks great in everyday lighting, and let your eyes be your guide. I would also see if I could compare it side by side to one with more of the classic ideal cut parameters to see if you can see the difference.
