I must say that I have learned more in the last couple of hours on this site than I had in the previous two months of shopping. Many sites, many jewelers, much reading, and I finally see the light. Now let me explain my delimma and why I just need a little more help. All my life my father told me that there are four rules:

1 - Buy as big of a house as you can afford at first because the mortgage you can barely afford today will be change in a few years.

2 - Drive the least expensive yet safest car you have to for you to afford that house.

3 - Pay off all other debts after you get the house - real estate appreciation outways managable interest.

4 - Buy your wife a big diamond so you NEVER have to clean that house.

The house is accomplished, I drive a modest car, am still working on a huge student loan debt, and am a clean freak so the cleaning is not the issue. My problem is that my girlfriend is 6''-1" tall, with larger than normal hands I would think. As part of her travelling modeling work she would wear a fake diamondengagement ring, her form of "pest" control if you know what I mean. A simple ring, I measured it to be roughly 7.25mm in diameter. Though it does look fine on her hand, I can''t bear giving her something smaller.

My question is how much can I sacrifice in quality to maintain something that size. I care little what it looks like under a microscope. I have read opinions about going all the way down to an "I" color, which I suppose I would be fine with but pricescope recommends not putting anything under "H" color in a platinum setting. So gold right? Well, she is one of those people who cannot wear gold, in any shape. Weird huh?

I have a budget of roughly $6K for the the ring, any thoughts?

This sounds like a "Rockytalky" post... but the message is clear o any forum chapter

You want a well cut, 1cts, J-VS diamond. What's with the H? There are a few lower colored diamonds around here, and people have very different tolerance to either color, clarity and cut. The buys I have withsed on pricescope go as far as K, I1 and non-sparkling OMC cuts, although not all at once. And np, J-K do not look bad in platinum or white gold (which is even whiter). Some people would not go below G color and some like cape color diamonds (myself). The only way to decide where you want to go with color grades is to see them, hands down. Few if any other objects are so closely scrutinized for the slightest variation in color as diamonds (and the other gems) are, so it is very hard to get a realistic image on what the "tint" in a J-K diamond looks like before seing one.

Without knowing what your hands-on experienec with diamonds is, I would say that I-J, VS2-SI1 is a safe region and goinf one grade below is either color or clarity from there is justified is you get a top cut (such as this). Of course, there are other sources, but all that info posted makes these a great place to start.

Hope this 0.2 worth helps a bit...

i would also recommend getting a white gold ring which is obviously not yellow gold which your gf won't wear! and neither would i (no offense to any yellow gold fans). I have a platinum setting but i would have taken a white gold-the only reason i didnt is because white gold still to me has a little tinge of yellow in it. which in your case might work well for you when you purchase your diamond it can be a lower color like and I or a J! but i would not put those colors in a platinum setting because it is too white for them and you would notice the color in the diamond, so i'd say go w/ white gold setting. alot better on the budget!!
