Another stone has now been thrown into the mix. According to the diamond dealer in NY who is shipping to my gemologist in Canada he finds this one even nicer than the last. I need thoughts on this please (Stone cold what do you think of this one compared to the last/yesterdays?).
GIA
Cut EX
Symmetry EX
Polish EX
Colour F Clarity VS2
6.48 X 6.5 X 3.97
Total depth 61.2
Table 57
Crown angle 35
Pavillion angle 40.8
Girdle: medium faceted 3.5%
1.6 on HCA
Help!
FWIW the gemologist in NY finds the symmetry on this stone to be superiors to yesterdays stone with a HCA of 0.8 and overall more appealing.

anyone can chime in pls

Looks promising from the numbers.

GIA report number and carat weight?

about 1.02ct?

Yes 1.02 carat - how did you know?
Sorry I don't have the GIA report # yet, my gemologist does. I've requested an ideal scope but he's not sure if ones available on NY's end.
Is it possible that even though this stone scores a little lower on the HCA that it could/should appear to be the nicer stone compared to the last??? Could a pavillion angle of 0.2 make that much of a difference combined with the supposedly better symmetry? What am I missing here?

Also stone cold if it were you which stone would you prefer if you're like me where at this point all you can see is the paper???(yesterdays or todays?)

HCA is a rejection tool, not a selection tool, so it will tell you which one is not performing well but not which one is the best.

Facet placement is important, which average and rounded numbers on a GIA report will not show. Pavilion angles are in step of 0.2 degrees, so the stone could in effect have an average pavilion angle of 40.56 and still shows up with a 40.6 degree, individual facets might be lower. A lower PA angle can result in a darker stone, so case by case.

I see I see.
I feel better you having said that. I feel better now about letting the eyes of the gemologist take precedence over the number on HCA.

Dancing Fire - how did you know it's 1.02 carat?

It is around the dimensions of a well cut 1c stone.

Thanks!

Ummm how about some of these? 8) :praise:

So here's an update: this stone is on it's way up to Canada from NY, here's hoping!!!! :D

Good luck. :)

Are you only able to see one stone? It is always best to be able to view at least 2-3 potentials, as there are subtle differences in "flavour" that cannot easily be seen on paper when it comes to diamond cut (e.g., lower girdle facets, color) , and that might determine your final pick.

Stone cold - thanks for sendig me luck, tomorrow's probably the big day
Dreamer D - yes he (my GIA gemologist here in Canada)has 2 other stones already there for me to compare to. However, they are both GIA Ex cuts but surprisingly (at least to me do not rate under 2 on the HCA I believe one is more around a 3.5). Also one only has VG polish compared to Ex, but I doubt honestly I'll be able to tell the difference in this. We specifically sought out a diamond that falls within/under 2 on the HCA seeing as how I will not be able to ideal scope until it arrives here. He said he's going to put them side by side and see if I can pick out the "more ideal" one. I hope I can!!!!
Wish me luck!

Oh, I should mention all three are colour F's so I probably won't see much a difference there. (at least I shouldn't!!)

Takes some pics of the three stones. For educational purposes... :P

That's not a bad idea!!
I'm super curious, do you have any predictions as to whether or not it's going to be really obvious which out peforms another?

What are the proportions of the other 2? I forgot... :P Also what are the lower half sizes respectively?

The specs on diamond # 2 are the same as above except the pavillion angle is 40.6 instead of 40.8 and this diamond is also almost perfectly round. The gemologist in NY said this stone has superior symmetry compared to #2 and my gemologist agrees that on the current stone is excellent.
Buuuuuut I just heard from him, and he says this current stone is just spectacular (ie the one with the pavillion angle of 40.8). He said he won't even show me #1 because the difference is sooooo huge. I guess that just goes to show that not all excellent cuts are created equal. My future stone just arrived here about an hour ago. He made a call just to tell me how impressed he is, he said it easily makes it into the top 5 stones he's ever seen and he's been in the business for 25 years! I owe PS a lot because that's where I learned a lot!!!!
Stone cold - I'll try to get the lower half %s asap. I think I may have the one for the current stone at home, but did I write it down, that's the question!!!
My gemologist said "wow there is really something to the HCA!!!". Yuppers!

Good to know about your gemologist. Maybe direct him over here or tell him about idealscope too? :P

I directed him over not to worry!.
I really threw him for a loop when I said no painted girdles, or dug out for that matter!
He was familiar with HCA, I'm just his first client to employ it's use or know if it's existence. He is familiar with ideal scope as well. I should explain that I'm from the praries in Canada, diamonds here are definitely not like those seen in Los Angeles on a regular basis.
I have to give my gemologist credit, he worked his butt off for me and is not greedy.

Update: I was able to tell the difference between the stone I chose (1.6 on HCA) and another GIA Ex cut (3.5 on HCA)!!! I chose the 1.6 HCA!!! Wahoo! I didn't so much notice a difference is scintillation but the fire I sure did. I was amazed at how the 1.6 fired even on the very edges.
No time to get pics though :(
I am now the owner of GIA 2125560716!!!!
Stone cold - the pavillion depth is 43%

I also found it interesting that as pointed out by my gemologist in the packaging for my diamond itself it states "Ex H&A". It was a piece of paper packaged with the diamond that had all the specs on it....very interesting. I had no idea GIA did that, it's certianly not mentioned on the DGR.

I did not look under the H&A viewer myself but my gemologist did. Yup it's a H&A apparently. I wasn't really after that to be honest, it's just a coincidence. But my gemologist said something along the lines of that even though it is GIA doesn't really "name" them specifically as H&A. I was hoping someone could elaborate on this. Does this mean GIA doesn't really comment on H&A patterns on the DGR/in general?
Stone cold so now that you know the lower half % any comments?

FWIW My gemologist is also a GIA appraiser, he told me what his competitors whom I know of would've charged me for this stone. He's a B&M owner who happens to have a few GIA stones, my only reaction was

Nope, GIA just note whatever is inscribed on the girdle of the stone in the comment section, they do not grade if a stone is H&A or not. So if you are the cutter or vendor with a laser inscription machine to write 'I love hamburger' on the girdle, GIA comment will be 'I love hamburger'.

75-80% lower girdle is average. As GIA round this numbers in 5% step, it could actually be from 72.5-77.4%, but if it is at 75% compared to a 80%, the arrows shaft will be thicker than the 80% lower half stone. Just personal preference.
