Hi all - another newbie here looking for some guidance on an engagement ring. I''ve been looking around online and at b&m stores for about two weeks now, and I''m ready to get it all over with! Decisions with too many variables stress me out.

Anyway, here''s my situation. My GF and I went to a lot of b&m stores (Shane, Jared, etc.) in our area to get an idea of what type of setting she likes, and she ended up picking one from Shane that was available in WG or platinum. The WG one was about $950, and will probably be the one I go with.

We also spent some time at each store talking about diamonds (4 C''s, yada, yada, yada). Even though I have already planned to buy the diamond online, I wanted to try to gain some "hands on" experience. In most situations, the sales person would bring out 2-3 loose diamonds at a time, and let us see if we could tell the difference. The ones we were looking at were anywhere from F to J in color, SI clarity, 1 - 1.25 carats, and "good" cut (so they told me). We also looked at some AGS0 "ideal" diamonds that were very overpriced. For example, a 1C, H, SI1 AGS0 at one store was $8000...I wrote down the dimensions and put them in the HCA at home and it didn''t even score below a 2!

I had done a bit of reading around on PS, so my thoughts going into these stores was that I was least willing to compromise on cut (the most important ''C''!), but I actually had a hard time telling the difference between most of them, except for the ones that were REALLY poorly cut. Some stores even let us take them outside in the sunlight and look at them. My GF seemed to be very good at grading the color of all of the diamonds just by looking at them, so I''m thinking I''d like to stay in the F-H range.

So here are my questions:

1) If cut is REALLY that important, why could neither of us see a difference? Was it because we probably didn''t see any that would have scored below a 2 on the HCA?

2) Do either of these diamonds look like a good deal? I''m trying to stay in the $6k -$7k range.

$7060 on PS:

3) I''ve seen a couple different opinions, but is there a preferred way to handle a setting from a b&m store and an online diamond? Send the setting to the diamond supplier? Send them both to an independent setter? Are there advantages/disadvantages between the two?
I apologize for the long-winded post...I''m trying to get all my questions answered at once :)

Most likely. The best test it to view a well cut stone (under HCA 2) to a good cut stone of the same colour and clarity under VARIOUS lighting conditions. Definitely away from the store "special" lights.

2) Do either of these diamonds look like a good deal? I''m trying to stay in the $6k -$7k range.

I will view these and comment in a bit.

The best thing to do is:
1. Get the loose stone insured.
2. Have the place where you purchase the setting set the diamond. Your insurance will cover any damage incurred during the setting process. Most likely, nothing will happen, but just in case.
3. If the place where you purchased the setting will NOT set the stone for whatever reason, have the place where you bought the stone set it. If both parties are not willing to set your stone, you can always bring it to another jewellery place to set it. Again, your insurance should cover any boo-boos. Also, make sure that any warranties to the setting is not voided if you chose to got this route.

Wow, both stones are killer stones. Does the JA stone have an Idealscope image? I looked all over the webpage but didn''t see anything. With both being ASG0 stones, they are comparable. Since both are super performing stones, I''d make my choice based on the Idealscope pictures.

Good questions.

Following up to Chrono...JM can help you with insurance.

Thanks for the feedback! I sent an e-mail to James Allen regarding the first diamond listed above and received this reply:

Thank you for your inquiry and your patience. Item# 1087025 is a gorgeous diamond and I have provided and idealscope per your request. This diamond is a fantastic SI-1 with no visible inclusions to the naked eye. After reviewing the plotting located on the AGS report, it appears that the clarity setting inclusion is a feather that is located on the pavilion of this diamond. There is also a small crystal that is located on the table. Keep in mind that these inclusions are not visible without the aid of magnification. Overall, this is a fantastic diamond for a great price. As for the setting you currently have, we can definitely set this diamond into that mounting without any problem. We would have you send in your ring so that this can be completed. Please don’t hesitate to contact our office with any further questions and have yourself a wonderful day!

How does this idealscope image compare to the other one? Should I be concerned abou the feather on the pavillion? (It can be seen in the idealscope image and in the "view diamond" window on their site) It seems a bit large to me, but I guess I''m still not used to looking at magnified stones...there were many others that looked a lot worse! And the main question...which diamond is better?? :)

I still have to talk to Shane about the possibility of them setting the stone, and what warranty the setting will have.

Anybody? Should I be worried about the feather or does it seem reasonable for an SI1?

I wouldn''t be worried about the feather. Looks like a beautiful diamond...the idealscope is gorgeous.

Have you asked WF where the inclusions are on their diamond?

I would make sure to have James Allen set the diamond for you, not Shane. James Allen will most likely guarantee the stone while they set it. I think with Shane, you''d just be screwed if they hurt your stone while setting it.

As far as the feather, if the diamond is eye clean, I wouldn''t worry about it. If it bothers you, check out some other diamonds and see how they stack up as far as price and performance.
