Need Help with Engagement Ring - URGENT!

Have you seen BN album of recent purchased engagement rings?
http://www.bluenile.com/engagement-rings/recently-purchased-engagement-rings
Select round diamond and classic setting then you can have a ideal about how the setting stays with the size of your selected diamond.
I think if your diamond is not big enough (>1ct) the six prongs will over power the stone, when I see through their photos I think only some diamond >1.5ct look proportional with the 6 prongs. But maybe that's look you want for your ring then please ignore my post.

I think it depends on the thickness of the prongs, 6 prongs can look nice on a <1 ct diamond if the prongs are done well in my opinion

Of course it is so, I just wanted to warn him/her about 6-prongs ring from Blue Nile as that's what he/she gave as an example.

Hey guys...that stone that he is looking at is an oval.

Its almost impossible for us to give you an opinion on an oval without pictures/aset images. The table on that one is bigger
than its depth which is not usually a good thing. I'll see if James Allen has anything.

EDIT - ok, very confused...he says round diamond but the example he gives is an oval???

tyty I was also confused, but since he said round diamond I just went with round. OP if you want an oval let us know

sorry everyone - I accidentally posted an oval diamond. I am looking for a round diamond.

So where should I put my money - cut, clarity, or color - for the biggest diamond I can get that will be very bright?

What ratings should I search for?

THANKS!

I would go with cut, a well cut stone will have more sparkle and can appear larger to the eye because of the brightness. But everyone has their own priorities. Look for one that scores <2 on the HCA. Clarity, I think anything is fine as long as eye-clean, color is a matter of personal preference. G/H/I VS2/SI1 is a good place to start

agree. an eyeclean SI1 is a great money saver- will allow you to go a bit bigger in carat size. Also- H-I are good colors- don't need to necessarily have colorless D-F or even G for your stone to look white IRL. (some reccommend J as well- if you have an ideal cut it should face up creamy white, may see a tinge of color/tint from side...)

Wow - That video was extremely helpful! It sounds like I should go with:

- J color (maybe I)
- SI1 (maybe VS2) - I definitely don't want visible spots - should I go with VS2 then?
- Cut - ideal

Do you think I am on the right track?

Thanks for everyone's help!

I think that if you are concerned with inclusions- VS2 is a good option. You can also looks for an eyeclean SI1- dont hesitate to call vendors like whiteflash and jamesallen and good old gold- BGD that have the diamonds thee with them and can look at them.

I think the I is a great color- and J is a great option that many love.
Ex. DreamerD loved her J and it gave her the size she wanted....as does Yssie, and many others...

**It might be useful to go to a jewelry store to see an I and J in the same size & cut (excellent) in person in order to determine what color you feel more comfortable with...yuo need to compare stones with same cut quality and color in order to compare apples to apples...

Ideal cut is great as it will have more sparkle, less tint...

if a SI1 is eye-clean there will be no visible inclusions, just make sure that it is eye-clean to your specs (standard definition is from the top down, not from the side view, so if you want it to be clean from the side ask the vendor). color is personal preference, maybe you can go to a store and see some in person? make sure to look at GIA/AGS graded for color though, and try to compare in different lighting if possible. you will see the most body color from the side, you have to decide if you like the higher color or if you don't mind (or even like) I-J color. I think I/J color is where most people start to see tint so if you are unsure maybe stick with H/I?

Ebay stone looks promising from the numbers.

Most of the JA stones do not have the reports uploaded. The AGS stone has too flat a crown and too steep a pavilion to my liking, might work but probably loose out on fire performance.

This one might be a nice one if it is eye-clean. You would need to call and ask the vendor.

Here is James Allen's response:

"I have great news for you; one of our gemologists inspected this diamond and determined that it is eye clean. The crystal under the table blends very well and is extremely difficult to pick up on with the unaided eye. She also said that it has nice brilliance over all."

I am torn between this one and the one on ebay:

Which one do you think?

I would take the JA stone anyday over ebay, You get a longer viewing period, and upgrade policy with JA that you don't with Ebay

i whole heartedly second this. You will be able to upgrade down the road if you want to (you would have to trade in current diamond and buy one double the price), BUT you still get the value of your stone back. If selling a stone you bought somewhere else, you get no where near the money you paid for it.

Also- better return policy, and I would go with a vendor over ebay for an engagement ring. my personal preference.

Request for idealscope image. Also ask if eye-clean and if the strong blue fluor is a problem.

Is it just me or does the BN setting prongs look rather thick? Even for a 1ct, the 6-prongs seem to overwhelm the diamond.
