Hello everyone!

ATM I am going nuts trying to figure out what diamond to buy. My special lady has very slim long fingers and she has already told me that she prefers small diamonds. She tried on 0.50ct and thought that was too big!

My question is.... visually is there much difference between a 0.25ct and 0.30ct diamond once it is set? I have looked at the charts showing diamond sizes and it seems that there is literally only a .2mm difference between the two. Would both sizes roughly look the same once they are in a traditional solitaire setting?

I appreciate any help and advice.... Ive already gathered I need to buy ideal cut lol.

Oh and if anyone has any pictures of 0.25ct and 0.30 ct diamonds, I would love to see them for perspective, esp side by side.

Thanks everyone

Hi Snoops and welcome,

There wouldn't be much difference if any between the size you mention with round diamonds once set in a ring ( assuming well cut stones as a comparison).

The only thing I could find for you was the chart in this thread -

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/diamond-size-comparison.83517/page-3

which shows a .25 on the hand graphic, but your best bet is to look at some diamonds in person to compare, I would suggest AGS0 or Hearts on Fire brand so you are comparing well cut diamonds.

Also be careful with the term Ideal Cut, the only meaningful use of this term is from AGS labs concerning their AGS0 cut grade. Apart from that, vendor applied labels such as the above don't necessarily guarantee you a well cut diamond.

Does she want an RB?

The size difference really depends on the shape. For instance, a 0.5 marquise cut is going to look pretty large compared to its .25 ct counterpart. As for the RB, I can really tell a difference between the two sizes (even the 2mm difference). When you get to 0.5, it just starts to look more like an engagement ring should, but it all depends on the setting and the person wearing it. For instance, a delicate lacy setting might work best with a .25 whereas you might need a 0.5 to look substantial in a plain tiffany prong setting.

I personally love intricate small stone settings on dainty women! Have you looked at Fay Cullen''s website? Lots of great options sure to take her breath away without weighing her down with too much stone.

Good Luck!!!

Lorelei- thanks for that link. It really helped seeing different sizes side by side.
Cousingigi- sorry i forgot to mention that she wants a RB.

I would have wanted to go for the 1/2ct size too but she wanted something smaller in a delicate setting paired with a delicate eternity diamond band.
She has slim long fingers and I think it will look elegant on her.
