a local jeweler to design my own engagement ring. It is going to be a 3 stone ring, with channels on each side.

I am going with a 1.50 ct princess cut diamond for my center stone, with a 0.38 ct princess cut diamonds on each side (approx. 2.25 total ct weight so far). Then, I would like to go with 8 channel cut princess cut diamonds (4 on each side), but I do not want the ring band width to become too thick, bulky, or tacky.

She has a size 7 finger and is just under 5''10", with average size hands - not too small and not too big. What size channel cut diamonds should I go with? What is a standard engagement ring band width that would look good with the above described diamonds?

I realize it is all up to personal taste but everyone here has much more experience with this kind of stuff than me. What do you guys suggest?

Thanks in advance!!!

sonal... I wouldn''t know what to suggest really (anything between 3 and 5mm is feasible, I would think), but there must be some examples of channel set wedingbands in the shop to help with the decision. Once the width of the band has been chosen, it is up to the maker to tell what size the stones may be - there is always a limit for how large the diamonds can be relative to the band.

Your project reminds me of a ring constructed in about the same way. (LINK)

Hope the example helps

I am not as familiar with princess stones for side stones but based on my own ring I would say you don''t want to go any larger than .05 for those small princesses. If your jeweler/designer is good at what they do then they should have a recommendation so that your ring looks balanced.

lp Valeria101 and zoobiedo!

Right now, the jeweler is wanting to go with 8 channel cut princess diamonds with a total ct weight of 0.60 ct. So, doing the math, it comes to approx. 0.075 ct per stone. I "think" that this would make the band considerably thick, but I do not know for sure, nor do I know how to calculate that dimension.

I agree with Valeria101 that a band width between 3-5 mm would be ideal, those seem to be the band width dimensions that I see the most. I just want to make sure that using these channel cut diamonds will not make the ring too "thick".

Since I have no model to go by, does anyone know what the band width would be using the 8 channel cut diamonds I described above?

Zoobiedo, do you know approx. what the band width would be on the 0.05 ct (0.40 total ct weight) stones that you are suggesting?

Thanks again everyone!

Hi there,

I was told by a jeweler that for a ring shank that has .40 ctw should be no thinner than 3mm, otherwise, the width is up to you!

ply fortheloveofdiamonds! I figured that would be about right, seeing as anywhere from 3-5 mm is the standard that I am seeing.

I honestly feel that anything over 4 mm is too thick for my liking. 3-4 mm looks just right to me. So, my final question to everyone is:

What will the ring "shank" thickness be for a ring with 8 princess cut diamonds (4 on each side) - 0.0725 ct each stone (0.60 ct total weight)? Will it be greater than 4mm?

If so, it looks like I need to get the jeweler to go with less total ct. weight for my channels.

Thanks!
