He paid $8200 total for the ring w/1 carat of side diamonds baguettes/channel set princesses. I feel like he might of got ripped off what do you guys think? what should he have payed for my stone? I don't know what he paid for just the stone alone. The stone is very bright and has no dark spots extremely clear but little or no fire to it. i did the cut adviser for pc diamonds put my specs in and it came up a 3A almost a 2B. the more i read here the more i think about maybe talking to him about it. any advice?

Does no one have any advice is my stone specs that bad. Please any input on what this PC stone should cost or what he should of paided for it.

I don't have any advice about the stone's cut but I would say something to him that you hope he didn't overpay and that you aren't happy with the center stone. He will likely be upset and maybe even offended but you feel like it's not of good quality and proabbly got reamed...I honestly don't know what to say but be honest with him.

Tough situation...

I wish I could help you on the cut, but I don't really know a thing about princess cuts.

As for talking to him, I'd say be honest, or it will bug you forever. At the same time, be kind and tactful, because it sounds like he tried to please you. Maybe something along the lines of... you know, I love that you surprised me, and you picked a beautiful ring. I've been learning a lot about diamonds lately and part of the fun for me is to get to look at stones. Would you mind if we did some comparison shopping?

And if you frame it in the context of looking out for him and making sure he didn't overpay, I think that could help too... still, be prepared for his feelings to be hurt. No guy (or gal, for that matter) likes to find out he didn't do as well as he thought!

I think you have your impression about the ring. You probably don't need to know how much he "over paid" for it. Maybe you should work in reverse.. what could you get for around $8K including a similar style setting. That is certainly research you could do on here -- or other sites - and the similar setting at www.solomonbrothers.com - or other site.

Then you could know I could have had "this" for the same price.

But really, you know your guy the best. I think he might be a little offended - ESPECIALLY because you mentioned that he wanted to do it himself. The hardest part about this... is going to be approaching him about it.

Honestly, you may want to keep your eyes to the future and an "upgrade" ring...but soon...like 1st anniversary... You don't want to hurt your FI deeply over a piece of jewelery....

Just my .02

I would approach him ASAP, as there may be some return policy. As the proud owner of a great princess cut stone, I can tell you that your numbers are less than ideal. I would not get a stone with a table greater than 72%, and a crown less than 10%. Although you may have to drop a couple of points to get a better cut stone, I think it would be worth it. Is your fiancé someone who would be understanding if you were to tell him you love the setting but want to get a different center stone? You can always tell him that, while your stone has a lot of brilliance, you want one with a lot of fire as well. You know him best--what will he think if you ask him to change the center stone?

well....while you're not happy with the fire, the positive point is that it probably looks pretty big for its carat weight b/c of the table and most people notice size in the non-pricescope world!!!
