I'm been shopping for a princess cut stone for some time, and it seems difficult to find what I understand to be a quality cut. Here is a stone that is being offered to me. I'd like to hear your comments on the overall quality and value:

Carat weight: 1.05
Clarity: VS1
Color: H
Table: 63%
Total Depth: 64.9%
Crown Angle: 34 degrees
Crown Height: 11.8%
Pavilion Angle: 44.6 degrees
Pavilion Depth: 51.4%
Polish: Good
Symmetry: Good
Culet: None
Girdle: Medium to Slightly Thick (1.3-1.7)
Flourescence: None

Price: $6535

Thanks!!

Proportions looks nice but price sounds a bit high. Did you find the stone in the web?

The quote is from the notorious Diamond Cutters International. What price should I be targeting for this stone? I was happy to find it because the measurements looked much better than most that I've seen so far. Most have table/depth of 70-80% which is too high from the research that I've done.

If I can get the price to a reasonable level, should I still avoid this dealer? I've heard mixed things about them on this forum, however their stones seem to be of good quality.

Oh, I see... Fred offers some extended warranties and it's up to you whether you like to pay extra for this.

For example: 1.06 G VS1 66.5% 69% GIA 5.91x5.7x3.79 is listed for less than $5k

Or

1.06 H VVS2 70% 65% GIA m-stk no vg vg no 5.75-5.64-3.95 $4218

As you can see these diamonds have higher Color or Clarity grades yet still much cheaper.

I am also trying to find a princess cut that fits into the parameters (GIA Class II)specified in Fred's book:

53-65% table
56-65% depth
32-35 Crown Angle
11.2-16.2% Crown Height
43.3-46.8 Pavilion Angle
47.1-53.1% Pavilion Depth

I cannot find a diamond anywhere that meets these specifications, and this is only class II! According to this website, the Class II (A) specifications for a princess cut are

64-75% Depth
11.1-11.5% Crown Height
59.0-59.9% Table

There is also a second row of data. I am assuming that if your table % fits into the top row, then the crown height should also fit into the top row?

71.1-72% Table
8.4-8.0% Crown Height

The parameters are so far off (especially total depth %) that I cannot help but wonder why there is such a discrepancy in "Class II" cut definitions.

Thanks

Marc
