Need an opinion on this diamond

It looks to be a lovely stone. You can request an idealscope image from JA to check on light return but it's got all the right
angle numbers. Call JA and ask for a gemologist to evaluate the color. Is it a true K or does it lean higher or lower? You can
ask if it is eye-clean (which it should be at a VS2).

Post the idealscope image here so we can have a look.

Holloway cut Adviser rates it as follows:

Holloway Cut Adviser
Selected: 62.1% depth, 54% table, 34° crown angle, 40.8° pavilion angle
The result is for a symmetrical diamond with a medium girdle and very good polish
HCA scores were adjusted Dec. 15, 2001 and Feb. 6, 2003.

Factor Grade
Light Return Excellent
Fire Excellent
Scintillation Excellent

Spread or diameter for weight Very Good *this is normal to only get very good here on a well cut diamond

Total Visual Performance 1.1 - Excellent
within TIC range *TIC is Tolkowsky Ideal Cut - a balance of brightness, fire and scintiallation

Anyone can put H&A on a diamond, but it also has the logo symbol, which is more significant for GIA, they will not put that on for anybody.

Hey guys, this is the gemologist's review on this diamond. Should I go for it?

My name is Garrett and I work closely with the gemologist over here at JamesAllen.com. I wanted to take this moment to reach out to you with the Idealscope image for diamond 40170 (0.72 carat-K-VS2; $1,910). I have attached the image to this e-mail for your review and I am sure that you will be very happy see it! With the Idealscope images, you want to see a lot of red/pink (this is your direct light return), a fair amount of black (this is your indirect light return) and little to no white (this is your light leakage).

I understand this is a large, important purchase for you. That is why I asked the gemologist to take a look at the diamond for us to give some "real time" feedback on the performance. As I am sure you expected after reviewing the image, the gemologist found the diamond to be a very lively option! It has an excellent amount of brilliance (white light return), fire (dispersion of color) and sparkle that is well balanced and symmetrical. As you would expect with a VS2 clarity, it faces up completely eye clean. The most interesting thing about this diamond is that it is a higher "K" (closer to a "J"), and is whiter than the a normal "K" color would face up.

Gorgeous.

I'm not sure I'd want a diamond with medium yellow fluorescence...

It was either an I colour VS1 with no fluorescence (which I found not to be colorless enough) or this F with fluorescence.

Outside it may look like a G but that's fine with me.

Be very cautious about the yellow fluorescence.

I am a fluor enthusiast, and every stone I buy has fluor.

That being said, I always avoid yellow fluor, as I've never found it to be beneficial for colorless or near colorless diamonds.

The thing is that there are many different variants of fluorescence, so it may be a very subtle effect or quite dramatic. The 'level' on the report (in this case 'Medium') will not replace a visual inspection in a variety of lighting conditions.

If you do decide to go with a yellow fluor stone, I would advise to have it shipped loose, so you can examine it in a variety of lighting, to be sure this is what you want.

If you want to stick with a fluor stone (which I wholeheartedly support!), check out these similarly-priced options, which possess blue fluor (beneficial):
